Male or female

This article is entirely dedicated to the young bulls. With a lot of luck I had the opportunity to take some photos of one in profile. The drooping tuft of hair on the lower abdomen that marks the foreskin of the penis is characteristic of a budding bull. The longevity of the very young calves quickly gives way to the normal construction of the bison and this little one already looks mighty big. Only next to his mother does it become clear how small he really is.

Age characteristics

The size of the horns also offers a good opportunity to determine the age quite accurately. Here we see a one-year-old with the horns not yet bent inwards. Its weight will be around 150 kg. The new calves will be born in May, but the signs of the cows cannot be seen for me, because the young are relatively small and, at 25 kg, represent only a small part of the total mass of around 400 kg.

Hard to believe that, and very sad to think, once hundreds of thousands of these remarkable mammals freely roamed the western regions of the United States...

It is hard to get them back into the wilderness with so many people around here in Europa. But we try hard to get them back. My photos are part of a documentation series. More to follow ...

It all starts with one small step and a leap of faith. I look forward to seeing additional parts of your buffalo documentary!🐃

The next part is online with links to all previous parts, have fun!

Such beautiful animals. If only we would have taken better care of them... Lovely photos my friend. Thanks for sharing.
