Sickle cell anemia as commonly called is a disease that affects the red blood cells .it causes the red blood cells to become misshapen and break down. It a disease that can be managed or even avoided totally. The advent of technology reveals the disease to people. In the olden days, when people don't know about this disease, it has claimed the life's of babies and children. In Yoruba land where I hails from, they call such children "Abiku" and do all sorts of rituals to relieve the parents from the dilemma. Oh! What ignorance.
In recent years, people now know that you need to check the compability of your fiancee or fiance before getting married so the children they will have,will be free from this horrible disease.lets continue to create awareness and sensitize people about it as today is the world sickle cell day. Now in Nigeria before couples are solemnized,in church, mosque or court, they request for the genotype and Blood group
to curb the number of sickle cell children in our community. Although some still go ahead even when they are not compatible and hope for miracle in name of love. Let's not be blinded by love and our own selfish interest at the expense of our childrens'good health. Say no to sickle cell anemia
