This limited series is NOT for the faint of heart - or squeamish of stomach. In fact, it's one of the most disturbing series I've ever watched. My brother recommended it to me and it's one of those that you can't stop yourself from watching or from turning your head and covering your eyes!
The plot is about a young unknown wants-to-be-famous film director named Lisa Nova (played by Rosa Salazar) who heads to Hollywood in the early 90s. She encounters struggling producer Lou Burke (played by Eric Lange) who thinks Lisa's short movie could shoot him back to the top of the industry.
Lou is the classic Hollywood poser and he screws Lisa on her deal after she refuses his sexual overtures. This starts a rampage of occult revenge like you have never imagined. I won't go into the details because you just have to see for yourself.
She is approached by crazy lady/occultist Boro (excellently played by Catherine Keener) who offers Lisa the chance to "hurt" her enemy. And after Lisa accepts, the antics begin.
The results of her spells and rituals soon overcome Lisa and she wants to call the whole thing off. But once you've sold your soul to the devil, she isn't willing to give it back.
This is a true Horror Story with a new and more disgusting "what the hell?" around every corner. There is enough of a plot that the story is interesting and not just a round of visual effects and action. It has all the elements from evil black magic spells, zombies, cannibalism, murder, death, blood-drinking, mind control....
As the series progresses we find that our main character, Lisa, is not as innocent and "wronged" as she seemed at first. She has done some things in her past that follow her to Hollywood and demand justice of their own.
The whole limited series is a take on the way of life in Hollywood where everyone wants to make it to the top and is willing to make the ultimate sacrifices to get there no matter who gets hurt.
My suggestion, if you decide to watch this, is don't watch alone!
And as an side note, I never did figure out what the title "Brand New Cherry Flavor" has to do with the series at all. Unless it's referring to the voodoo stew....
