[ENG/ESP] Turning Red, ¿the best movie about adolescence? Oh yeah and I'll tell you why 👇

in CineTV2 years ago (edited)

Greetings and welcome to this sincere and humble movie review of the new Pixar movie "Turning Red" 😆

Well, almost two months after its release, this animated film continues to give us something to talk about with two clearly divided poles, those who love it with passion and those who hate it and label it as "weird".

I belong to the first one.

It is simply impossible (at least for me and my close circle) not to love this movie. It has become one of my top 5 favorites along with "The Roaming Castle" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" saga.

Why is Turning Red an excellent family movie?

I could sum it up in a general answer, "Because the world is changing and cinema must adapt" but let's look at it in more detail.

1. It talks about "Censored" topics / Habla de temas “Censurados”

It is no secret to anyone that women have a menstrual cycle and it is the consequence of natural body development, so why has the subject of body development never been addressed in animated films?

The answer is simply because of "modesty". Because these things have to be talked about in private and at home, because they are uncomfortable topics... but it is more uncomfortable for a girl who is developing to think that she is going to die because no one ever warned her. (Yes, it happened to me)

The most curious thing about this is that in the 40's (in the middle of the post-war period) Disney produced a series of educational animated shorts among which stood out, what a surprise, one with the name "The history of menstruation".

It took 82 years for the house of the mouse to approve again a project that talks about women's physical changes, but, even so, it suffered some censorship as it was not released in theaters... although the producers claim that it was due to the pandemic.

The fact is that these issues should be talked about, not only girls with their mothers and fathers, but also boys should know how nature works in girls, because those boys will be friends, husbands and fathers tomorrow, and they should be familiar with the subject.

But it also talks about those uncomfortable episodes in relationships with extremely controlling parents.

That stage when many of us wish our parents would move closer, but not have to live with them because we simply feel they limit us too much.

And yes, that's the painful truth, when we are pre-teens, teens and young adults, we love our friends a thousand times more than our parents, and this movie exposes it magnificently, with a white lie by Mei to her parents (that she never gets to tell out loud).

It also talks about that exciting moment when we are still very young and discover for the first time that we are attracted to the opposite sex (or the same one, we'll get to that), with one of the funniest scenes and from which a considerable amount of memes have been drawn.

With much subtlety they have made it clear that there is nothing wrong with having different tastes. In certain scenes we can see how Mei's friends show that they have different tastes from the hetero-established and it is treated so naturally that no prejudice really crosses your mind, it's more like "ah, well, that's cool".

2. It shows that it is always better to negotiate than to prohibit.

We all at some point in our teenage years wanted to attend a certain party or event that would make a noticeable difference in our popularity status. And we almost always ran into a huge wall in our parents.

What happens in Turning Red? What happens in life itself but that no parent wants to admit, the girls use lies and cunning to get their way.

Is it wrong? Yes, but where is it really wrong, in the supposedly rational parents who understand the dangers of attending a concert, but also understand what teenagers are like, or in the emotional bombshell of being a 13 year old girl?

This movie gives a nod to this generation of "New Age" parents who are often conflicted between control and acceptance that their offspring is growing up.

I am of the opinion that in this new age, categorical "NO" without discussion is no longer a viable option, especially if your son or daughter is doing well in school.

A negotiation of terms and conditions is always a brilliant idea to keep your child happy even when you're holding him or her on a leash

I must say I would be a bit like Miriam's parents, who told her they would give her permission to go to the concert if she got the money 🤣 a wonderful opportunity for her to learn the value of money and the effort it takes to get it.

3. It talks about the moment when we start to see ourselves as adults / Habla sobre el momento en que comenzamos a vernos como adultos

In at least three scenes you can hear Mei refer to attending the concert as the "first step to becoming a woman" which is very funny, because at 13 years old you are never considered an adult, even if that is how you perceive yourself and go to every party and event in town.

Much has been said about the old topic "Teenagers think they know it all" "When you were going, I went and came three times".

Turning Red is not the first nor the last film to deal with this issue and the difficult situation in which parents find themselves trying to control a young person who supplants their sweet child.

But it is one of the pioneers in showing how your family totally cancels out a part of you, while society approves of it and loves it madly.

This is a complex allegory, but believe me it makes sense.

The ritual to "trap" the spirit of the panda in some object is basically to go into a trance and then go through a mirror where the panda detaches itself from you, and then you are "you" again.

But you are not really "You", you are "You" without that part that your family doesn't want you to explore or show in public. A passionate, funny, emotional and sincere part. A part that, curiously and for centuries, some men have not wanted to see or recognize in women. (Nor women themselves, as is the case of Ming in the film).

That's what transforming into a woman is all about, exploring that chaotic part of you and accepting it. Giving a huge hug to your red panda and knowing that this is you completely, without anyone telling you that you can't go to a concert "because you won't keep your composure, you'll let the panda out and that's not what a mature woman does."

Well at Mei's school they loved their panda, how about letting ours out once in a while?

P.S: I should add that in this new digital age, teens and young adults are the ones setting the tone in the world. Watch out for that.

4. The countless references to otaku culture / Las innumerables referencias a la cultura otaku

Finally, I know that many are not as excited as I am by the references in the drawing and winks to Japanese animation, but believe me, this film is a sincere handshake without rancor between the two forms of animation, occidental and oriental.

It had already been explored a bit with "Big Hero 6" but Turning Red is something that goes beyond that. It can easily be recognized as a Pixar film, but the anime touch gives it all the personality the film needed.

You're just going to love everything you see on screen and recognize a bit of otaku culture in every scene, not to mention the ones that are purposefully made for the fans.

Well, I hope you liked this sincere and heartfelt review. I encourage you to give this film a chance, you might find some valuable lessons or just enjoy the retro vibe of the 2000s.

Kat-nee (or the girl who has seen Turning Red at least 3 times and wants to see it 2 more times 😆)

A mi tambien.

Thank you for your review. I haven't seen this movie but I think it is good to talk about growing up in a healthy way with the children and give them a way to express themselves. Thanks again.
