Mystic River (2003)

in CineTV2 years ago

I was mentally down, nothing was feeling right, I mean I was finding everything boring. I was so down that I didn't have any energy to find a movie and start watching. Movies work like magic to cheer me up, a good movie can pull me out of any kind of shit. Well, I was lucky to find one available, just a click ahead to be played. And yes, I asked for a coffee and started watching. With a coffee and this one, my whole mood is on track again. Need to finish this writing and complete the pending works too.

Mystic River is a Crime-Drama genre film. This one is directed by Clint Eastwood. The base of the movie is from a novel written by Dennis Lehane in 2001 that goes with the same name.

The story starts with three boys, who are friends and were playing together, and one of them named as Dave gets kidnapped, and sexually molested, later he gets escaped from there. The rest of the story is set after twenty-five years from this incident.

So Jimmy, one of those three friends, his daughter goes missing. Sean, another friend of that trio, who is a detective now looks into that case. They somehow find her being murdered so Jimmy and Sean both of them get in searching for the murderers in their own ways. Well, Jimmy was the strongest of those three, in his childhood, and even now, he had friends with the name "Savage brothers" whom many feared.

Let's cut things short, Dave was the prime suspect of all, he did murder someone on the same night which he confessed to his wife and was hiding the injuries he had suffered while executing that killing. We get many back stories about Jimmy and others too, he wasn't a saint, he did robbery and got imprisoned for that, another suspect was Katie's boyfriend, his father had some clash with Jimmy too, so he had the motives too.

Actually, it's a crime movie, when a crime is executed then there are many suspects, evidence, and leads that call for a decision to be executed. We saw how someone's dark past could influence. Can you imagine a situation where three childhood friend, one of them is suspected of the murder of another friend's daughter, what will they do if he is truly the murderer? Throughout the whole movie, I really liked Jimmy's performance, played by Sean Penn, a father who loved his daughter the most, for which he can go to any extent. Actually, that's what every father does and we got to experience that but what did it cost while doing so? Let's leave that as a mystery for you. And yeah, the character of Dave Boyle was really confusing as per the story, I mean he really messed up, not his good performance but it was his character that made this impression, which was played by Tim Robbins.

The ending of the movie is really amazing. If we step aside then we get a quote in the end by Jimmy's wife, "A king knows what to do and does it. Even when it's hard." Many thoughts were moving around about what's good and bad at that ending, keeping that judgment aside I was really impressed by the spirit of the character which goes with this quote.

Few points might feel confusing but I was finding it hard to explain the thoughts with the plot without spoiling it. One in line, I loved the movie, would surely love to rate it 8 out of 10, and already recommended a fellow movie freak like me, hehe. Looking for a crime genre movie? Go for it.

Deservedly, the two Oscars won (best leading actor to Sean Penn and best supporting actor to Tim Robbins)

Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn make sparks, and Clint Eastwood is an excellent director.

Yeap, they deserved it.
Thank you for stopping by.
