Cine TV Contest #33 - Favorite Movie With a Prominent Father: The Music Never Stopped.

in CineTV2 years ago (edited)

In the mid 80's, parents Henry and Helen Sawyer, will have to face the clinical situation of their son Gabriel Sawyer, who had been missing for two decades when he ran away from home after an argument with his father.

Now in his thirties, this son has become a young man suffering from a brain tumor that prevents him from generating new memories. He maintained a conflictive relationship with his father and throughout the film there is a touching plot of forgiveness and brotherly love, influenced by pop and rock music of the 60's which allows the patient to recover some of the functions of memory and a more or less normalized behavior.

At the beginning, the father is dominant and traditional, pigeonholed in his memories, but little by little he manages to become a responsible father who seeks his son's communication and love as an absolute priority, assuming past mistakes and making an effort to accept his son's hippie culture.

The music marks the passage of time and functions as a motive of dispute between the personal and ideological interests of father and son.

The tension arises as the son's adolescent musical preferences (Grateful Idead, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Bufallo Springfield, The Beatles, and Cream) clash with the father's tastes (Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Peggy Lee). When the father tries to approach his son through the music he likes, he fails, but when he does it through the music the son listened to in his youth, an activation of the son's long-term memory occurs.

This father maintains a straight and firm ideology, of patriotic values, a type of life that he wanted to transmit to his son since childhood, as we are shown in flashbacks.

The father talks about his life to his son in relation to the songs they listen to such as how he met his mother at a dance and what was the song that was playing or the favorite song of his brother, deceased. However , this type of music will not be the one that will get his son back.

The son's character goes through a recovery process that contradicts all medical prognoses, thanks to the musical therapy promoted by a young doctor, much more efficient than treatments based on medication and reclusion. It is a story that wants to make us understand that music is an effective therapy for mind and soul, and that it also has a close relationship with memory.

One of the most beautiful things that the film shows us is the c The role of the father is that of a father, who is a very good friend of the family, and who is a good friend of the family.

The role of the father is that of a man who carries the weight of his regret and leads one to hope. There is a memorable scene in which the sixty-something father has a dyed T-shirt and bandana having fun with his son at a Grateful Dead concert. Here, is where the reconciliation that the father was seeking, tormented by his past behavior towards his son, takes place.

This American independent film features some performances worthy of admiration: J.K. Simmons as the father is intense and sensitive, Julia Ormond as the therapist is very convincing in her role, Cara Seymour is shown as a concerned, patient and understanding mother. Lou Taylor Pucci plays the sick son well.

It is very touching to see the father's change in the face of his son's situation, he is a man who gives everything for his son's well being and is able to change his way of seeing life by understanding his son's way of thinking which allows him to be more empathetic with people. I as a parent believe that this is the greatest sacrifice we can make for our offspring.

It is a film that literally brought tears to my eyes by appealing to my feelings as a parent, using popular music and rock music from the 60's and some oldies tunes as a medium. It is reconciling to see the understanding that happens between father and son. It also conveys the idea that music changes our mood in a matter of seconds, when we hear the first chords of that song that reminds us of our first kiss, our first failed love, our first drunkenness, the first concert of our life and all the memories linked to a specific song.

It is a story that provokes emotions and that after seeing it immediately became a collector's item and cult (at least for me) in my video library.

The Music Never Stopped is a 2011 film directed by Jim Kohlberg based on an essay by Oliver Sacks titled: The Last Hippie. This movie is highly recommended and highly entertaining.

!1UP

Hello, It is a very good movie and transmits a nice message. Being independent it did not have good distribution. The story is by the same author of the movie Awakening with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.
