I haven't seen it, but I appreciate your analysis of where Hitchcock may have mislaid his focus. I think artists sometimes come to have more affection for pieces that run counter to their apparent type, even if they are of worse quality in others' appraisal. Maybe that's a reconnection to their sense of creativity and independence.

Of course, and his affection for the film may have more underlined reason that is not surfaced via the film.
And his affection is not really a metric for anything, other than being a firm invitation to see the film.
