Yusra Mardini - 'The swimmers'

in CineTVlast year

Imagine that you are a teenage girl in a war-torn country. Soldiers try to intimidate you at every turn and spoil your fun days and even molest you. Will you not want to escape all that and go on to live in another free country even if it means traveling on a small boat across the seas with the constant fear of drowning and not being accepted by foreign countries and laws?

The Swimmers is the real-life story of two sisters who escaped Syria on a small boat along with other refugees and reached Germany. Yusra Mardini went on to compete in Olympic swimming championship during the Rio Olympics in the year 2016.

I will give the links to two videos. One is the trailer f the movie on Netflix and the other one is a short by the Olympic Channel, featuring the real Yusra and her coach Sven.

Here is the trailer for the movie on Netflix

Interestingly, this movie also includes the popular song - I am Unstoppable by Sia.

I was asked to watch this movie and when I got time, I started watching it and did not get up until it was over. Usually, I do not watch at one sitting because of various reasons like chores and other disturbances but this movie made me forget all that and that is very good. There is no lag. There is not a dull moment.

The movie details how the young sisters are trying for competitions and when war destroys everything, they escape from Syria with the permission of their parents who are brave enough to let them go inspite of the fears that surround the travel and the uncertainity of making it alive.

The movie shows the group of refugees battling the seas and how they almost drown. Some may argue that the movie could have shown the championship part alone but then this is the story of survival against all odds and not about winning the Olympics.

The sisters reach a refugee camp and face many difficulties. Yusra trains and also visits a swimming training center and requests the trainer to test her and he is impressed that he accepts them and gives them free accomodation. She goes on to win the heats and was recognised worldwide for her fighting spirt and represented the refugee team.

Having traveled through several countries, Yusra finally settled in Germany and was able to bring her parents too.
Yusra was appointed as the global ambassador for the UN refugee agency.
She has now been given German citizenship and will therefore not be able to participate in the refugee team but hopes to compete for the country in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Yusra Mardini is a ray of hope for several people who like her struggle to live a normal life. For no fault of theirs, normal people do not get peace of mind and an ordinary lifestyle because of political issues and wars. Children who never know the joy of growing up in a peaceful surrounding. There is nothing that you and me can do anything about it but we can cheer for people like Yusra Mardini.
