Once upon a time there was a boy called Dick Whittington. He was an orphan which means he did not have a mom or dad. He was very poor.
He heard the adults telling stories that in London the streets were made of gold and he decided he would go there and make sure that he becomes very rich.
He travelled for many days and when he got to London, he found out it was all a lie.... there were no streets of gold. He was so tired and hungry that he fell asleep on the steps of the first house he saw.
The owner of the house was a rich and kind man and gave Dick a job to work in the kitchen. He worked very hard and was happy because he had food and a warm place to sleep. There was just one problem. There were many rats and they bothered him at night and would eat the food.
Dick decided to get a cat. This cat was a great hunter and he caught all the rats in the kitchen. The business man was so impressed that he asked Dick if he could borrow the cat to catch the rats on his ship.
Dick was sad to send the cat away, but before long the man was back from his voyage and told Dick that the cat did a great job. He also saw that Dick was working hard and he made him his assistant.
He taught Dick everything about business and Dick was eager to learn. He fell in love with the man's daughter and they got married.
Dick became a successful business man, earned a lot of money and also became the mayor of London.
This story shows us that things work out just the way it is suppose to - sometimes life just takes you on a few twists and turns.
