On the 28th of July 1914 the First World war started in Europe. This war would carry on for just over four years up to the 11th of November 1918.
This war was called the world war since 135 countries across the world took part in it.
The countries were divided into two groups called 'The Allies' and 'The Central Powers'
The countries of the Allies included Russia, France, British Empire, Italy, United States, Japan, Rumania, Serbia, Belgium, Greece, Portugal and Montenegro. The countries of the Central Powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria.
The colonies of these countries would also fight on their side.
But what really started the war? A lot of people were not happy with the way politics were being run as well as the policies of in certain countries, but the final turning point according to some historians was when Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife who was pregnant at that stage was assassinate by a terrorist group called 'The Black Hand'.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was the nephew of Emperor Franz Josef and heir to the throne of Austria and Hungary.
Besides from the assassination that triggered the start of the war, there were also other causes.
