Some Boring Topics Are Important

Hello. In this short education post, I want to talk about how some boring topics are important.

Not Every Topic Is Fun & Exciting

I have seen a lot of education posts on Steemit (pre-Hive) and Hive along with other online materials. There have been many published articles and videos which try to make difficult and boring topics such as mathematics, history, economics and finance fun. There is nothing wrong with this. In fact, I am for this as there is a respectable effort in increasing teaching quality and production. A problem I see that is despite all the efforts to try to keep students engaged, there are some topics that are just not fun, exciting nor interesting to students. The topic could be difficult, poorly presented, not interesting or maybe not even relevant to the lives of students.

Some topics that may not be fun for students include:

  • Mathematics
  • Economics
  • History
  • Science
  • English
  • Language
  • Grammar
  • Any topic that a student could find boring or not interesting to them.

As students are different in their own ways, some may find popular topics boring and some may find unpopular topics interesting.

The Importance Of Determination, Mental Focus & A Strong Work Ethic

There are times when school is not enjoyable as you have to learn topics that don't seem interesting or have no (perceived) value in real life. The thing is that doing bad in a subject you don't like hurts the overall grade average. A lower grade average may not be competitive enough to get into certain universities/colleges, medical schools. A failing grade holds you back as you need to retake a course. Keeping these consequences in mind, there is importance in determination, mental focus and a good work ethic. It is one thing to do well in a subject you like but it is tougher to do well in a subject you don't really like.

In a boring/hard subject it is far easier to not try and settle for a poor grade with an excuse of "The class was boring so I didn't try.". To be able to push through boring and difficult subjects and do well is a sign of mental strength and character. Schools generally (in my opinion) don't really outright teach you to be mentally strong. Instead they give "tests" to see if you can push through the boring stuff and do well.
