Comprehension Passage: Adebisi the Courageous Queen

Queen Adebisi, an extremely beautiful woman, was the wife of King Oladipupo. She was a faithful and strong supporter of the kingdom of Oyo. At a certain time, the neighboring village was regularly and successfully invading and raiding the people of Oyo. they took away their belongings and took some of the people to become their slaves.

Queen Adebisi was very unhappy and so she decided to go their goddess to ask what she could do to save her people and promised that she would give anything possible to make her people save. The goddess told her to allow their enemy to capture her when they come again.

As a result of her courage and bravery, she allowed them to capture her. Also, because she was very beautiful, she was taken as booty to their King. As a result of her being confident and skillful, she was able to win the trust and love of the king and the people around her. she learned their customs and methods of warfare. She found out what they did when there was war was to cover themselves from head to toe with grass and bamboo ropes. She discovered that if one could pass among them with fire, they would be burnt and be defeated.

Queen Adebisi escaped to her hometown (Ogun) after discovering the secrets of the warriors. When they attacked Ogun people, the Ogun warriors set their grass and bamboo ropes on fire. That was how they defeated their enemy and became free from raids.

Queen Adebisi went back to the goddess to fulfill her promise. she sacrificed rams and lambs but the goddess did not accept them. The only sacrifice that would be accepted was Queen Adebisi's only son, Adegbenga. Unhappy, she allowed her only son to be sacrificed in gratitude to the goddess for saving her people.

The Ogun people mourned with the Queen and since then, they made themselves her sons and daughters.
