Self esteem also known as self worth or self regard has been an important issue of discuss, especially in the formative years, many years back according to research and experience, the best period to imbibe and encourage a positive well worth in them is now.
A child with a negative or little self-esteem can become depressed or fall short of their maximum potential later in life or to tolerate abusive situations which leads to mediocrity and one the other hand, too much self love makes a child to be unable to accept failures.
The parent and teachers plays the most impacting and long lasting roles in a child aside roles of religious organizations, non-governmental institutions in fostering a child's self-esteem.
Some of the ways of building self-esteem positively in children by parents and teachers are:
- Children while growing up should be encouraged and taught how to appreciate themselves for who they are. for example, parents or a teacher with a disabled child should not discriminate him or her from other children because of his or her condition, etc.
- Both at home and in the classroom, no child must be looked down on or regarded and valued more than the other, i.e equal opportunity class, it encourages improvement and team work.
- Words: This is very pertinent as ill and abusive and degrading words or statement like "you are dull" or curses go a long way in damaging a child psychologically and might be permanent, thereby bringing down his or her self-esteem if not checked. Therefore, productive words, blessings and words of encouragement are important; this gives children a sense of belonging and makes them feel valued.
Children are the heritage of the Lord; let's build them up with the right self-esteem as parents and teachers.
