The best signal of the coming war can be seen through the media: When journalism turns into propaganda, war is inevitable!

Remember, this is a war against all of humanity, and recognizing the manipulation becomes a matter of survival in that war. But how will we recognize the moment when the media stop being informative and become propagandistic and manipulative? For news 'consumers', this recognition is not at all easy. On the other hand, insiders – journalists themselves – can see it quite clearly. Then there remains the question of their honesty in telling the truth, or their corruption – by becoming cogs in the propaganda machine.

Today I have to present and translate a text written by Carolina Vasquez Araya, a journalist from Ecuador, who described one of the ways of recognizing propaganda through the description of the work of Ryszard Kapuscinski, an outstanding Polish reporter, travel writer and author.

Запамтите, ово је рат против читавог човечанства, и препознавање манипулације постаје питање опстанка у том рату. Али како ћемо препознати тренутак кад медији престану да буду информатинви и постају пропагандно-манипулативни? За ‘конзументе’ вести ово препознавање није нимало лако. С друге стране, инсајдери – сами новинари – то могу да виде прилично јасно. Даље преостаје питање њиховог поштења да истину саопште, или њихове покварености – тако што ће постати шрафови у пропагандној машинерији.

Данас морам да представим и преведем текст који је написала Каролина Васкез Араја, новинарка из Еквадора, која је описала један од начина препознавања пропаганде кроз опис рада Ришарда Капушћинског, изванредног пољског репортера, путописца и књижевника.

It is essential to know how to distinguish the difference between journalism and propaganda.

The way in which the news function has been transformed into a strategic arm of global economic power has evolved until it has become part of the landscape. What was once an exercise in risk-taking, confrontation and a useful tool for society now seems to have taken the opposite side by manipulating and concealing truths that, if they were in the public domain, would be capable of turning the most powerful topsy-turvy. What is striking, however, is the cynicism with which the major news networks show their contempt for the humanitarian tragedies ravaging the planet, and how their content is accepted as absolute truth.

Making a spectacle of other people’s misfortune is, it seems, a tactic capable of bringing audience advantage and, consequently, a substantial increase in advertising revenue. What Kapuscinski, the great Polish reporter, considered the fundamental rule of journalism: “Look for the truth among ordinary people, forget the high circles of power when you need to find answers. Describe the details, because sometimes therein lies the key to everything. To flee from vanity and the over dimensions of the ego like the plague itself, because that is where one begins to lose objectivity and the sense of things. And to travel alone, so that someone else’s vision does not distort the pure and direct perception of the reporter” is today considered a competitive disadvantage.

Kapuscinski travelled the world and not as a tourist, in high-end hotels. He walked the almost forgotten roads where human misery was evident. And he recounted his findings with an unconditional emphasis on closeness to the humblest of people, the neediest of peoples. His profound analyses could cover the entire content of a doctorate in ethics and his teachings would be capable of reversing the very meaning of a profession which, from being honourable, has in some cases become the media equivalent of hired assassination.

As a strong opponent of all types of armed conflict – in his career he saw many and, above all, their effects – this Prince of Asturias award-winning journalist once stated that “the first victim of war is the truth”. Looking at the current panorama and putting everything in its place, it is important to point out that the overwhelming display of war spectacles and their dehumanising rhetoric reflect the trend of a journalism designed for and by the hegemony of the most powerful countries, thus ensuring the submission and progressive weakening of nations considered “dependent”.

Genuine journalism professionals, who see their field reduced by pressure from de facto powers, the influence of large corporations, blackmail and threats from businessmen and politicians and, above all, from legal bodies closely linked to criminal organisations and corrupt armies, are persecuted. The incessant pressures to silence the truth and conceal state crimes are not only a thing of Third World countries; we see it in the big international networks, condoning spurious decisions of the great powers and turning their aggressions into an example of democratic virtues. Journalism today is going through the greatest credibility crisis in its history.

Kapuscinski practised a model of journalism that today is on the verge of extinction.

Начин на који је функција вести трансформисана у стратешки крак глобалне економске моћи еволуирао је све док није постао део пејзажа. Оно што је некад била вежба преузимања ризика, конфронтације и корисно оруђе за друштво, сад је изгледа прешло на супротну страну манипулисањем и прикривањем истина које би, да су изречене у јавном домену, могле да направе најмоћнији преокрет. Оно што, међутим, упада у очи јесте цинизам којим главне новинске мреже показују презир према хуманитарним трагедијама које пустоше планету док се њихов садржај прихвата као апсолутна истина.

Прављење спектакла од људске несреће је, како изгледа, тактика која може да донесе предност у публици и, последично, значајно повећање прихода од реклама. Капушћински, велики пољски репортер, сматрао основним правилом новинарства следеће: „Тражите истину међу обичним људима, заборавите високе кругове моћи кад треба да нађете одговоре. Опишите детаље, јер понекад у томе лежи кључ свега. Бежати од сујете и превеликих димензија ега као од саме куге, јер се ту почиње губити објективност и смисао за ствари. А путовати сам, тако да туђа визија не наруши чисту и директну перцепцију репортера, данас се сматра хендикепом у конкуренцији.“

Капушћински је светом путовао и то не као туриста, у врхунским хотелима. Ишао је скоро заборављеним путевима где је била очигледна људска беда. И он је своја открића описивао са безусловним нагласком на блискости с најскромнијим људима, онима којима највише треба. Његове дубоке анализе могле би да покрију цео садржај доктората из етике и његова учења би била способна да преокрену сам смисао професије која је, од часне, у неким случајевима постала медијски еквивалент плаћеног убиства.

Као снажан противник свих врста оружаних сукоба – у својој каријери видео је многе и пре свега њихове последице – овај новинар с наградом Принца од Астурије једном је изјавио да је „прва жртва рата истина“. Гледајући садашњу панораму и стављајући све на своје место, важно је истаћи да неодољив приказ ратних спектакла и њихова дехуманизујућа реторика одражавају тренд новинарства осмишљеног за и хегемонију најмоћнијих земаља, чиме се обезбеђује потчињавање и прогресивно слабљење нација које се сматрају „зависним“.

Истински новинарски професионалци, који своју област виде униженом под притиском фактичких власти, утицајем великих корпорација, уценама и претњама бизнисмена и политичара, а пре свега, правних тела уско повезаних са криминалним организацијама и корумпираним војскама, бивају прогоњени. Непрекидни притисци да се истина прећути и прикрију државни злочини нису само ствар земаља Трећег света; видимо то у великим међународним мрежама, кроз одобравање лажних одлука великих сила и претварање њихове агресије у пример демократских врлина. Новинарство данас пролази кроз највећу кризу кредибилитета у својој историји.

Капушћински је практиковао модел новинарства који је данас на ивици изумирања.

Today, the war has already begun, and distinguishing journalism from propaganda is no longer difficult: corporate media have become pure propaganda, and journalism has moved to alternative media and is trying to restore the honor of the profession from the margins.

And don't think that they don't die in that war. The victims are not only related to the hot war front of the exchange of fire. One of the fallen on this media front is the late German journalist Udo Ulfkotte, who wrote the book ‘Gekaufte Journalisten’ (Bought Journalists) about the interference of the security services in the German media. In English, the book was published under the title “Presstitutes Embedded in the Pay of the CIA: A Confession from the Profession”.

Данас је рат већ почео, и разликовање новинарства од пропаганде више није тешко: корпоративни медији постали су чиста пропаганда а новинарство се преселило у алтернативне медије и са маргина покушава да врати част професије.

I would suggest that propaganda is incessant, and while we may detect a difference in propaganda as overlords gear up for war, it is not ever possible to detect propaganda suddenly starting, because for as long as I have been alive I have been fed propaganda by the enemedia.

What is new is censorship. I have long said that censorship always precedes war, and have been saying that for years on Hive.
