Here is an article from Fox Business, dated November 29, 2022:

Germany signs 15-year oil deal with Qatar amid Ukraine War

Starting in 2026, Qatar will supply Germany with liquefied natural gas for the next 15 years, as gas supplies from Russia have gone dry due to the war in Ukraine.

The agreement is between Qatar Energy, the country's state-owned oil company, and Germany's ConocoPhillips, which will give Europe access to oil from Qatar's North Field expansion project for the first time.
...
Germany was thrown into a fueling inflation and energy crisis because more than half its gas came from Russia at the time. The gas supply to Germany officially shut down in August, forcing the European state to find new suppliers going into winter.

Germany was thrown into a fueling inflation and energy crisis because more than half its gas came from Russia at the time. The gas supply to Germany officially shut down in August, forcing the European state to find new suppliers going into winter.

Germany will get LNG from Qatar from 2026 to 2041, which has nothing to do with coping with winter of 2022. This deal is for the future.

Anyway, after Nord Stream pipelines between Germany and Russia were sabotaged, it seems Germans found out they need another "fossil fuel" supply route.

Why wouldn't Germans just go "green" with their renewable energy such as wind and solar power?

Because it's not sustainable.

Some radical environmentalists shouted something like "fossil fuel is bad and the world will end in 10 years." Apparently German government doesn't think so. If the world will end in 10 years because of fossil fuel consumption, why do you need 15-year supply of LNG?

When energy shortage actually happens, it shows that so-called renewable energy in current state cannot replace conventional energy sources.

And I don't think the world will end in 10 years because of fossil fuel consumption or carbon emission. The elites are still flying around with private jets and buying luxurious houses near the sea.

Sort:

There's no other way. Either you buy gas and energy elsewhere or you may be in risk for the near future...

In a large scale scenario, so-called renewable energy technology is neither sustainable nor environment friendly. It has a long way to go.

Yes, you're right. But there's a war right now and winter plus a recesion fear upcoming. Let's not forget any of that...
