Without public transportation, a lot of low wage jobs would have to be automated or such business using such workers would have to close and then prices would go up for those using such services. It's a win win.
I don't feel safe riding my bicycle in many places of my city. As a pleasure vehicle, I can use it near the house and its fine or take it to a quiet area but for using for moving around the city, I feel naked without the crumple zones around me.
