ecoVillages Update #35: WATER!

It has been a month since my last update, hard to believe.. and lots of news too! If you have been following the ecoVillages journal you will know we are working toward building an earthship model to use for ecoVillage communities in Portugal and beyond. I moved onto our land just 10 weeks ago where i have erected a yurt to live in, and have been busy setting up the groundwork that can lead to the first earthship build workshop. It feels like people are getting desperate to get building something.. and with so many choices it's hard to know which path to take. Earthships are, in my opinion, the best solution to a truly secure and self sufficient life. I have been speaking about important security is for a long time now, and today that message is even more important. It is NOW that we have to make the choices about what we want our future to look like. It is amazing to see how many people are coming here now, fleeing the new totalitarian state in progress.. especially in countries like the UK. I could have never imagines an Orwellian fantasy coming true so quickly and so easily.. with most of the people assisting in the systematic removal of our most very basic human rights.

And so I urge you, as i do everyone.. get off grid and start living more self sufficiently. Its a much more beautiful life, and you will find that you are much more free than you are in cities. The movie The Matrix portrayed it well, with those that managed to escape and lead a more natural life in Zion. This is what SO many people are doing here now, and myself included! I hope to one day very soon not only build my own earthship home here, but most importantly also teach others and help them to do the same.

So, it is with great pleasure that I can share with you that as of last week we have WATER on our land, via a borehole. My preference was a shallow well, which we tried but water was not found where the douser showed us. It was clear we would need to go deeper. VERY interestingly, if you are curious about water dousing.. .The second man who came to douse the land chose the exact same spot as the first douser. He walked just a few paces in this and that direction.. and before i knew it has honed in on,.. THE SPOT!

The digging process was intense, and i later learned that what would normally be a few hours of drilling.. took three days! His drill hammer was not working well.. The ground shook, and dust and diesel fumes polluted the air for hours on end. I even cried a bit at the start, and thanked the earth for this gift. It was not pretty.. but.. after much anticipation we finally hit water at a depth of 60 meters. That was a great moment, and one that will make it easy to host the earthship workshops and build. .. and of course I am Very very happy to be able to wash properly again, and really clean my dishes properly!

I leave you with a few photos of the whole process. There is more news.. and I will post more very soon! Its been hard to post much lately with SO much going on.. but im getting back to it now..

NO TREES WERE HARMED IN THE CREATION OF THIS BOREHOLE...
more or less.. we'll make up for it! ;-)

DO I SEE WATER?!

good news while the world goes crazy!

60 m is deep, but then I guess the advantage is that the water is very unpolluted by animals and agriculture.

apparently some go 150 meters.. and yes quite right on the pollution.. you should see what i have just down the road.. really badly executed mass cow extinction racket happening.. ugh ;-(

Wow! That is some industrial process, but also quite local looking - that machine's done many a borehole by the looks of it.

I get the feeling you've been holding off writing until you got this done, I guess it is a key thing! Is it drinkable?

The bore hole at the place I'm staying is 'extreme' - I think it is that 150 metres you mention below - and the water isn't drinkable, fine for everything else though!

Happy you've got this done!

I'm amazed how much drier it is around Penamacor, up here it's relatively lush, I guess that's mountains for you!

yes the mountains dont have such a harsh summer.. i think that helps.. this area is for some reason rather extreme in climate! i do love the mountains!!

Holy crap! I never thought a well drill is such a massive machine! Now I completely understand what you meant by having almost cried. I would have done too. It's nice to know, however, that the result of such industrial drilling is a well with water you can depend on. Good job, and thanks for sharing! :-)

yeah.. it was a bit much.. im sure it would have felt better if they only dug for one day and didnt have SO much diesel pollution from their old skool machines.. anyways.. we got there in the end.. and wow.. cant tell you how liberating it is.. well im sure you know.. bought my first fruit tree today to celebrate.. a lemon ;-)

Yeay, happy lemon tree! This way you can be sure life is going to bestow lots of lemons on you. :-)

Case in point, we need to tell more people to make less babies because the water table replenishes extremely slowly compared to the surface well you were hoping for. But I know you will use it responsibly :)
