EcoTrain QOTW - Who Are the Most Relevant People of the Time (to you)

in ecoTrain3 years ago

Another challenging question of the week for us to wrap our brain things around from @ecotrain.

The question suggested whether there are any celebrities or politicians that might be significant to our time, i.e. people with global influence or systemic-significance, and I'm very tempted to say Elon Musk is a candidate, given his recent tweeting about Tesla no longer accepting Bitcoin as a payment and the apparent carnage that's wrought on the crypto market.

But then I'm not actually prepared to say Elon or any other global personalities are significant to me personally - their quick-fire messages might well impact my wealth in the immediate term, but I can't know that for certain, I can't trace that causality with any certainty, I just don't have the data.

And I don't personally know Elon, or any other celebrity for that matter, and that distance is ultimately what makes them less significant to me.

I went to my first face to face social event in 18 months last weekend

And met loads of new local people, and I'm more inclined to say that these are the kind of people that are more relevant to me, or at least will be, going forwards.

Making new, real connections, with a diverse bunch of people with a diverse array of interests and skills was just wonderful, it's been a while what with Covid lockdowns making this difficult, but I finally got a feel for the real network around the Penamacor last weekend, and it's pretty vibrant and interesting, and VERY diverse.

It's these local real connections that are, well, real, that I'm more interested in fostering - talk about helping each other when cars break down (as they do around here) and with land related projects on the go, and of course just the general chilled out camaraderie, which has intrinsic value in itself.

And then of course there's all the local neighbours and shop owners who only speak Portuguese - it would be nice if I could level up my language every time we have another interaction, that's in my mind constantly, not that I'm making that much progress with the language, but it's highly significant.

And of course a shout out to the Hiveans I regularly interact with

It's not just IRL people who are significant, Hive remains a pretty stable part of my life, and the interactions I have on chain and on Discord, defi-fretting for example, have taken up quite a lot of time recently!

I'm kind of between IRL and Hive for my significant interactions!

Final thoughts

There's lots of people, making up lots of networks that make up the relevant people in my life ATM, just ordinary people getting on with their lives who I cross paths with briefly but frequently during the course of a typical month, certainly not systems- types!

I guess I'm the perfect post-modern personality!

Sort:

It's such a strange world right now isn't it? I have met some friends a few times during the last months, but they have now left to UK and will probably not be back before baby 2 is born in August. For the rest, things are quite boring outside of the household to be honest, especially now it seems that hotels/cinemas and I believe (if not misunderstood) that pools etc will only be available for those with a vaccine. Which I'm not going to get. I'm gonna try to get an immunity cert so at least we wont get stuck all summer.

For me personally, it's not too bad, I will survive but for the kiddo, it kind of sucks. Thankfully, we now have a car so we can also seek outdoor stuff a lot easier.

I wish I could say the same about meeting up with locals and learning the language, I'm honestly only focused on upping my Spanish as we plan on moving back to Spain next year the latest. I feel there's a much better sense of community where we lived there, compared to all places we lived here, I think Portugal must be similar. (never been there though, it's on the list)

Enjoy connecting!

It certainly has been tough the last 18 months, it's such a relief things getting back to normal.

Not keen on getting that vaccine myself!

Where abouts are you? in the UK>?

I wish I could say the same, as last summer we didn't have to wear these masks here outside, but this time it's been a mandatory thing for months already, lost count about the months honestly. Must have been somewhere beginning of this year that they added that things to the list. I said last year: I will die if they force us to wear these outside, imagine that with 30+ degrees.. And here we are, all winter with mask has passed, which was doable until a certain point, but still I don't agree with it as I really get dizzy and feel that I don't have enough oxygen..

Now it's May already, and they still didn't drop that mandatory mask wearing outside. I feel sick thinking about the fact that we may be wearing them all summer. Let me tell you that I will avoid crowded areas and seek nature instead. In green areas we can walk without them, Eastern Europe. I believe UK is currently a lot better so my friend told me (she's in the UK now).

I'm 99% sure I had covid a few months ago, and before I got ill, my boyfriend was ill. A lot less than me, but he was the first to get ill. So I'm quite confident that when we get the antigen test it should show that we had it already, this will give us the opportunity to get the immunity certificate valid for 4 months, which I prefer over the vaccine any day.. When we move back to Spain at some point, we will most likely need to get it anyway (but not going to worry about that now, as we can't foresee what will happen exactly anyway)

Sounds horrible, I think avoiding those crowded areas is the way to go.

If you need to shop just do so as early as possible!

Yeah, I always try to. Once the temp rises and the supermarkets / stores are packed with people, it's instantly noticeable that there's a lack of oxygen in the malls, making you dizzy with the mask covering your face. During winter, it was not that horrible as it is now.. So yeah, avoiding crowded areas and being early is a must :)

I was expecting you to list some prominent figures, but it feels more relatable when you mentioned ordinary, everyday individuals. I rather enjoy being ordinary myself.

Oh I love being ordinary, it's the best way to be!

It's great that you got to meet a lot of new people and had a good time, I think we're all appreciating quality social interactions a lot more now with all that's going on.
Hive is definitely a great way to stay connected to like-minded people all around the world. :)

Hey yes it was nice - first time I've been OUT in ages, very chilled, amazing people and location, by a river, perfect weather, just spot on, ended up sleeping in my car due to too many beers, drove back at first light haven't done that in a while!

Had I taken my laptop I probably would've been on Hive until day break!

Wow! Congrats on having had your first IRL interactions in 18 months! It must feel amazing seeing actual real people. Under these conditions it's little surprise that your Portuguese is not improving (though honestly, I'm certain it is, just so slowly and incrementally that you don't notice).

On your major point I'm completely with you: Celebrities like Elon and the rest are just fabricated images that people generally DON'T interact with. Compared to that, commenting on someone's Hive blog, who lives on the other side of the world and whose real name you don't even know, is a much more real interpersonal experience.

Ah, there were mainly English speaking people at the party, there A LOT of english people around here.

I need to learn the lingo for sure.

Yes celebs, we don't KNOW them, interesting point about knowing anonymous people, it's a strange one, eh?!?

A strange one for sure... which also makes it my favorite one! 😃

Very nice post. I feel the relevant people are people who have had impact on me and have a potential of affecting the people around me positively.

Hive and leofinance have done that and i think they are ranked as the top relevant peeps to me.

Ah very fair point - got to stick with the positive people, ditch the drainers!

Hive and Leo - life changers for me!
