6 More Household Items Salvaged From Curbside Recycling Sold For $635

in ecoTrain3 years ago (edited)

I had to visit a sick relative, so no curbs for me tonight. She asked me to stay over, so I’ll put family first and sleep on her futon.

From her couch, watching a baseball game, here are 6 more recent sales of items I saved from the curbside recycling and resold for income.

Mountain Bike:

  • Sold for $220 cash.
  • Found 3 minutes before the truck came to the spot it was at.
  • This was barely used and had clearly been in storage for many years.
  • Cleaned it up, tuned it up, and filled the tires.
  • Sold within 3 days of listing.
  • I was glad to save this one. There was no need for this to be crushed on a truck, and now someone can enjoy it for years to come.
  • Recycled weight of 29 lbs.

Nerf Ammo Drums & Magazines:

  • Sold for $140 cash.
  • 19 other smaller ammo clips were also included. Clips aren’t pictured as these were upsold.
  • Sold to a man who got these for his terminally ill father to use with his grandchildren. He wanted his Dad to have little issue shooting them in wars. Hey, you never know what people have in mind!!
  • Recycled weight (will be updated when back home).

Smart Robot Toy:

  • Sold online for $85.
  • Tested with an iOS app and all worked.
  • It’s a clever toy where you send texts to the robot from a phone via the app, and control/interact with it.
  • Recycled weight with recycled packaging (will be updated when back home).

Men’s Leather Boots:

  • Sold for $70 cash.
  • The buyer emailed me late at night asking for a discount.
  • I replied accepting his offer, and asked when he’d be available to meet.
  • I went to bed late, and woke up at 8:53 AM to toss and turn.
  • I checked my phone to see if anything sold, and saw two emails from him saying that he was outside waiting for me!
  • I wrote back to find out that he left, but he came back within 10 minutes. He was about to leave the city. What crazy luck that I woke up for him as he showed up randomly without my confirmation.
  • Recycled weight of 4 lbs 1 oz.

Printer Printhead:

  • Sold online for parts/repair for $55.
  • I bought generic ink to test the printer since it seemed like it’d be a decent $150 cash sale if functional.
  • Despite cleaning the head, and with good test diagnostic prints, regular photo printouts were still streaky.
  • Recycled weight with recycled packaging of 6 oz.

Dishwasher Inlet Valve:

  • Sold online for parts/repair for $65.
  • Removed by hand from a Miele unit that was on the curb.
  • These are very expensive parts, but I sold them as a discounted gamble for the buyer without being able to test it.
  • I also salvaged the motor. It took about 20 minutes to remove both of these with my screwdrivers on the sidewalk.
  • Recycled weight of 3 lbs with recycled packaging.

Summary:

  • Total sales of $635 revenue.
  • $635 revenue/6 items = $105.83 revenue per sale.
  • All items shipped were done so with recycled packaging.
  • Costs of $7.19 for generic ink to test the printhead.
  • 68% of revenue received as cash.

My effort is not in this post, it's in the time I spend to go out and find these quality household items from within the curbside recycling -- to help the environment, others, and myself so I can continue doing this.

Thanks for your time and interest,
Matt

I still get inspired reading about your endeavors. And I'm very happy to see you're still at it, repairing, recycling and doing your part for the environment. It never even crossed my mind that a water hose for a washing machine could be worth that much money.
