Ladies of Hive Community Contest #67

in Ladies of Hive2 years ago

The two themes of the contest are very interesting, and beyond the fact that here on Earth I have my family, friends and work, I find the question about going to Mars interesting.

Well, the first thing I think about when asked about going to Mars on the first manned mission is: what would I do there? What would I contribute? What would I be interested in seeing? And of course, what would be the objective of the mission?

Then I'll start thinking about the mission. Musk won't be able to do it alone and it will have to be a partnership with governments - no government would miss putting the first flag on Mars - so aerospace agencies come in and, there, research. Research also always gives a facelift to missions that are meant to conquer somewhere 🙄.

I think that due to the size of the ship -and the amount of supplies to be transported- it wouldn't be possible to carry too many people, so it would be useful to take people trained in various subjects, not hyper-specialists. In my case, as a palaeontologist, I have studied the life and story of animals and plants as well as geological processes and their products in my undergraduate and postgraduate training. I could be of help in all these aspects. And that might be where my interest lies: will I find evidence of life on Mars? I know the planet is tectonically dead, plates stopped drifting a long time ago, but how will it receive the biological contamination we leave on it? Will anything more than a tardigrade survive? Will terrestrial organisms adapt in time to live there? Will we be able to terraform? 😱

As for the evidence of life that might be found, all living-present life could be assumed to be contamination, but what if there are fossils? Will they be like those we know from Earth's past? Will it be possible to verify or reject the hypothesis that terrestrial life comes from outer space?

There are a lot of questions, since being able to survive the travel and finally to survive there, but if the trip is successful it may be possible to find positive or negative answers to many questions about the origin of life.

Lastly, I hope the crew includes several women, not just one!

As i'm new in the community I don't know many other people, but i invite @mariavuu and @corvidae to the community
