Lo que se plantea esta semana es que retrocedamos al pasado, en mi caso, 30 años, para ver como hemos evolucionado hasta hoy en día desde nuestro punto de vista como mujer.
This week I am once again joining the weekly initiative of this community. Thank you @graciousvic for inviting me to participate.
The question this week is that we go back in time, in my case, 30 years, to see how we have evolved to the present day from our point of view as women.
Hace 30 años yo cursaba mis estudios universitarios. Tengo la suerte de pertenecer a una generación donde el acceso a la universidad era accesible para una gran mayoría. En mi casa mis padres siempre nos alentaron y ayudaron para ello. Una de las cosas que me decía mi madre, que en paz descanse, era que estudiara para que consiguiera un buen trabajo y fuera independiente económicamente, que no dependiera de ningún hombre. Ella era ama de casa y siempre dependió de mi padre y supongo eso le pesaba.
Thirty years ago I was studying at university. I am lucky enough to belong to a generation where access to university was accessible to the vast majority. At home, my parents always encouraged and helped us to do so. One of the things my mother, may she rest in peace, told me was to study so that I could get a good job and be financially independent, so that I wouldn't depend on any man. She was a housewife and always depended on my father and I guess that weighed on her.
Aunque muchas acudíamos a la universidad, estaban las típicas carreras que cursaban más las chicas y las que mayoritariamente cursaban los chicos, y en estas últimas entran la mayoría de las carreras técnicas. Yo elegí una de estas. Y recuerdo que éramos pocas chicas en clase. Y evidentemente los profesores todos hombres.
Although many of us went to university, there were the typical courses that were mostly taken by girls and those that were mostly taken by boys, and the latter included most of the technical courses. I chose one of these. And I remember that there were few girls in the class. And obviously the teachers were all men.
Luego llegas al mercado laboral y más de lo mismo. Tuve la suerte de encontrar un buen trabajo en una buena empresa como Ingeniera técnica y allí la gran mayoría de los técnicos eran hombres, de hecho solo había una mujer en el departamento técnico cuando llegué. Las mujeres se dedicaban a puestos administrativos y secretarias como norma general.
Then you get to the labour market and it's more of the same. I was lucky enough to find a good job in a good company as a technical engineer and there the vast majority of the technicians were men, in fact there was only one woman in the technical department when I arrived. The women were in administrative and secretarial positions as a general rule.
Todo esto ha cambiado un poco, según han ido pasando los años, más mujeres estudian carreras técnicas y acceden a puestos de trabajo acordes a lo que han estudiado. Sin ir más lejos, las dos últimas incorporaciones técnicas en mi centro de trabajo son mujeres jóvenes con toda una carrera por delante.
This has all changed a bit, as the years have gone by, more women are studying technical careers and getting jobs in line with what they have studied. Without going any further, the two most recent technical recruits in my workplace are young women with a whole career ahead of them.
Otra cosa son los puestos de responsabilidad y de liderazgo, aquí antes apenas había y ahora se ven muchas más, no solo en las empresas sino en los mismos gobiernos. Pero lejos de parecer que todo es perfecto, seguimos padeciendo desigualdad económica para los mismos puestos de trabajo y en muchísimas ocasiones tenemos que estar demostrando nuestra valía para desempeñar nuestro trabajo, simplemente por ser mujer.
Another thing is the positions of responsibility and leadership, where there used to be hardly any and now there are many more, not only in companies but also in governments. But far from everything seeming to be perfect, we still suffer from economic inequality for the same jobs and on many occasions we have to prove our worth in order to carry out our work, simply because we are women.
Lo que quiero decir es que si bien hemos evolucionado mucho y hemos llegado a áreas y lugares antes impensables, seguimos teniendo que demostrar nuestra valía y que nos lo merecemos diariamente. Son muchas las mujeres que hemos de renunciar a nuestra carrera profesional por la dedicación a la familia y cuidados. Y si no lo hacemos, entonces se nos juzga de forma negativa. Encontrar un equilibrio en este sentido no es fácil. Yo he podido disfrutar de medidas conciliadoras entre la vida laboral y personal, pero sé que pertenezco a un tanto por ciento pequeño.
What I mean is that although we have evolved a lot and we have reached areas and places that were unthinkable before, we still have to prove our worth and that we deserve it on a daily basis. Many of us women have to give up our professional careers because of our dedication to family and care. And if we don't, then we are judged negatively. Finding a balance in this respect is not easy. I have been able to enjoy work-life balance measures, but I know that I belong to a small percentage.
Creo que las nuevas generaciones lo tienen más fácil en este aspecto porque tienen otra educación y hay un cambio de pensamiento general que poco a poco va generando cambios. Ellas, las mujeres que vienen, que ahora tienen la edad que tenia yo hace 30 años, darán un nuevo salto hacia adelante.

I think that the new generations have it easier in this respect because they have a different education and there is a change in general thinking that is gradually bringing about changes. They, the women to come, who are now the age I was 30 years ago, will take a new leap forward.

Taking a step into predominantly male orientated field often left woman battling to become employed even though equally educated.
Moving forward with more woman going into technology fields, finding balance and assistance while raising families much has changed, hopefully with time all employment opportunities will be equal.
You are right, the tendency has always been to choose men when faced with the same technical studies. It has been changing but there is still a long way to go. It is unequal depending on the professional field we are talking about.

Times will change once people accept, certain fields will take a lot longer than others, where called on to work night shifts or extreme physical strength is required, this I have experienced where woman approached workforce.
30 years ago some women were no allowed to even go to school. They will they will get married and take care of the family. My mummy told me that.
Currently women are allowed and even allowed to study male courses.

It is clear that the situation of women, both now and in the past, varies greatly depending on where you live. I had access to a good education, but my mother and aunts did not. From their generation to mine there has already been a big change. That's why we have to keep fighting, so that no matter where you live you have the same opportunities.
