Wednesday Walk at the Rose Garden

The rose garden in town is maintained by volunteers. Most of the volunteers are retirees.

And I bet they are all rosarians.

The volunteer gardeners are deadheading the tired blooms.

When a rose has completed its bloom and it is "spent" or wilted, it should be removed. It keeps roses looking attractive and encourages more blooms.

During the blooming season (Spring or Summer), deadheading a rose bush regularly hardens them for the winter.

Some volunteers are removing dead wood off the roses.

A healthy rose has green live stems. The dead wood on a rose bush is significantly darker and does not support new life.

Others are checking the leaves for pest and diseases.

Fungal diseases such as mildew, blackspot or rust, are common in roses. The leaves may be attacked by aphids or scale or thrips.

I saw a volunteer gardener weeding, and checking the drip system.

And general cleanup and upkeep of the rose garden!

The town is lucky that there are people who devote some of their extra time to helping the community!

Oh! the work that these people do is commendable, worthy of praise. Those roses look gorgeous and there are many different types. Seems like hot weather, they shouldn't have fungus problems. Another thing is the aphids and other parasites, personally I do not remove the weeds, I integrate them so that they act as a shelter for pest predators such as ladybugs.

I don't know about where you live. It is sunny here, almost all the months as I am from California. But these pictures are from my roses. As you can see... fungus... and..

If that looks like some mildew. California has a Mediterranean climate, you shouldn't have that problem. Perhaps there is some excess watering or poor ventilation. If the problem persists, you can use a mixture of sulfur and copper powder, used in ecological gardening, at the end of winter. Just when the first buds come out.

Weeding roses is the worst. I did Ok last year in half of a long bed that borders my driveway. But this year the places I didn’t get so well last year is super evident! They are pretty in bloom though.
