Batch 25 Finished, Puff Pancake Recipe, Feed, Wood - Tuesday

in Freeze Dried Foods3 years ago

4:30am yesterday morning the cycle finished and the freeze dryer sat and gently beeped at us until we got up. I pulled all the trays out and everything was perfectly done. The corn, peas, and green beans took just over 40 hours to finish.

Of the three veggies the green beans are the only ones to change shape much as they dry. The corn and peas stay roughly the same shape and size with the peas losing more water than the corn. The beans lose the most water weight.

I have my produce bags I use for co-op sales and they are the perfect size. I am able to slide the bags over the trays and dump the trays into the bags very easily. If I want I can store the product for a while in the bag before transferring it to mylar bags. These are going to mostly get left out for us to eat now with only some going to long term storage.

Now that the chickens are giving us eggs everyday again I am able to do a puff pancake for the boys for breakfast. It is a super easy quick meal that we cook in the toaster oven and is ready in about 20 minutes. It can be made any number of ways to include any kind of flavorings.

The recipe:

1 Tbsp butter
1/3 c flour
1-2 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
3 eggs
1/2 cup milk or substitute

Place butter in 9" pie plate, bake at 400F for 5 minutes until melted.

Meanwhile in bowl mix flour, sugar, salt, and flavorings. Add eggs and milk and whisk till smooth.

Take pie plate from oven and swish melted butter around to coat the bottom and sides of pie plate. Pour batter into hot pie plate and bake at 400F for 10-12 minutes.

Variations/flavors:
cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice
Add 2 Tbsp ground flax
almond and/or vanilla extract
bacon bits or other crumbled meats
Savory type seasonings

After feeding the boys we took R to school then J and I drove north to Kaniksu Feeds to pickup some more bird food. I got a single bag of grower to finish off the meat birds finally so we can butcher them this weekend. I got 300 pounds of layer for the hens and ducks to eat and I poured the bags into the drum as their feeder is still about 1/3 full.

The afternoon consisted of getting the rest of the wood rounds moved to the wood pile area. I piled them up and then threw a cover over the since we are expecting up to 3 inches of snow today.

Today the boys have checkups, it is snowing, I am going to start shifting some things to prepare for the flooring installs, and R's room needs to be cleaned up desperately.

Absolutely phenomenal job man and that is definitely the way to food security knowing that you can but a supply of nutrient rich foods away or an extremely long time.

Thanks! Given that the fascist thieves are in power I am expecting seeds to become contraband again and food to become far more expensive. Gas is going to double this year alone. The more food I can put away now the better off we will be when the shtf.

In the first week of the presidency we seen gas increase 25 to 30% and I can just imagine what the further idiocy is going to amount to
