"I don't understand it, Melinda. Why would you want to be scared - or scare a friend?" Esie asked, confused.
"It's sort of like when you splash on one of your human friends. You're not really trying to soak them too much, you're just trying to make them laugh," replied Melinda, unsure of how to explain Halloween.
"Oh, then it's like pretending to scare someone?" asked Esie.
"It's sort of like that. You'll just have to experience it for yourself," replied Melinda with a smile.
"If it's going to be fun, I'm in!" Esie said enthusiastically. She eagerly left the meeting area at the dock, and went out to sea. Esie dove deep, then sailed into the air. Once her excitement had been fully expressed, she returned for the rest of the conversation.
"Well, let's start with the Halloween costume party tomorrow night. You dress up as someone else, or maybe as a monster. Don't worry, we all do it, it's just for fun, and nobody will be afraid of you," Melinda assured her new friend.
"Then I'll think of something super scary," said Esie, getting excited about the strange human holiday.
"I can't wait to see what you come up with! Have a good night, Esie," replied Melinda.
"Grandpa, what's the scariest thing in the whole ocean?" she asked, as soon as she got home.
"Hmm. I think it would have to be the Great White Shark," he replied thoughtfully.
"Perfect! Thanks Grandpa, you always know just what I need," she said before racing off.
Her bemused grandfather simply smiled, wondering exactly what he had said that was so helpful.
Esie proceeded to collect broken bits of seashells, only the whitest ones, with sharp points. She carefully poked them into long strips of seaweed, sharp ends sticking out.
Then she searched the depths of the ocean floor until she found a deposit of chalk. "This will be my base. I'll leave all the other things here, so I can get ready for the party easily," she thought happily.
"What am I going to use for a fin?" Esie wondered, suddenly doubting her ability to complete the costume. Then she found a large piece of plywood, large enough to be meant for the side of a house. It had obviously fallen off of a freight ship.
"Now I just need a way to cut it," she thought, wishing that she had hands. Unable to find a way, she wedged it between two large rocks which were very close to each other. Then she gently broke off a roughly triangular piece.
Afterwards she smoothed and perfected the shape with rough sand. "A seaweed harness should keep it on,"Esie thought happily.
The next night, Esie returned to her chalk deposit. She rolled and scraped in it until her massive blue body was a gleaming white. Then she did the same to the plywood fin, and its harness.
Carefully slipping it and the false shark teeth on, Esie went to her favorite shipwreck. A huge section of the hull had been broken off, to reveal a grand ballroom like no other. The entire wall was a mirror.
Satisfied that she looked like a big shark, she sped towards the spot where the humans from Hive would be celebrating Halloween in a big glass bottomed yacht.
"It sure was nice of them to figure out a way to include me," she thought, love and gratitude welling inside of her massive heart.
Soon she was there! "The tiny humans look completely different. One even seems to be wearing a shiny can," Esie noticed, as she hid amongst some boulders.
"Time to make my entrance," she whispered with a toothy grin.
Stealthily she glided right up to the glass, and soon screams of panic echoed throughout the yacht. A few seconds later, the engines started.
Confused, Esie followed the boat, staying as close as possible. "Maybe it's a game? I think I'll get in front of them," she decided.
Esie swam full speed, then when she was in front, she bobbed to the surface, and grinned. As soon as she surfaced, part of the chalk was washed away by the waves.
Bluefinstudios was the captain, and he noticed the blue, as well as the harness attaching the huge fin. He let out a huge sigh of relief, and turned off the engines.
"It's not a Megalodon, people! It's just Esie," he informed everyone.
Suddenly everyone on the boat burst into hysterical laughter. Then Esie began to laugh too. The scariest whale to swim the seven seas finally understood Halloween!
