Not the best photo, but I was in a hurry.
I am a sentimental man. One small thing can trigger a dozen thoughts weaved into a web only I can follow. Today I passed a picture of Lauren Bacall which I have passed probably ten times before. But today it caught my eye for some reason.
My mind went to my daughter, then to a late friend of mine. He adored her, he made it his mission to break her out of her shell as she was (and is) still the most shy of my children. I think he may have broken through a bit, as I do remember hearing some sparse conversations between them as I passed by like a ninja as not to tip her off.
He commented one day that she looked like Lauren Bacall. I had no earthly idea who that was. I love old movies, but I'm usually watching a few decades before or a few decades after Miss Bacall. Really, I'm more of an Evelyn Nesbit or Audrey Hepburn fan, the 40's is an odd gap for me.
Anyway, I looked her up. I kinda saw it. But not. He definitely saw something I was missing. Something in his 70+ year old eyes noticed an expression, a feature, something that I couldn't quite see.
But today I saw it. As I said before I have passed this magazine cover many times and noticed it. I think I may have even remembered it was Lauren Bacall. But today it arrested me. They truly do look similar. It was like looking at my daughter in 10-15 years (and also 80 years ago).
I showed the photo to my other daughters. The 12 year old did not see it at all, but the 16 year old saw maybe a slight resemblance. It has to be something with age. My eye can finally see something only an older eye can see. I can only imagine what my late friend saw!
I miss that man. But today I smiled a bit, because a Life magazine cover of a 1940's actress made me think of my daughter which made me think of the man who made the comparison. Life is a complex web of people and places and time.
My hope is that I have the wisdom of Sam one day, to be able to see that web. And to plant the seed in someone's head to make them smile long after I am gone.

Beautiful story and such a nice memory to recall while sharing it. She was one of my favourites to watch with my grandmother when I was a child and I hadn't thought of Miss Bacall or those movies with my grandma in decades. Thank you for bringing a lovely memory back to me as well. 😊
