RE: WTF: Have You Forked Up?

in Reflections20 hours ago

I grew up with a little dog like that. He was about two or three when I was born. He was a bit battered: he only had one eye after an altercation with a cat and at some time he had been run over. He survived and everything seemed to work, he had a little crook in his back, and that was it. I didn't see the accident but I remember my dad coming out of the house and picking him up and putting so gently into a box to take to the vet's. He used to go out on his own, take a turn around the block, cross the road and circumambulate the school playing field opposite, trotting briskly along like he had things to do. I'm not sure how he let my mum know that he was back so she could let him in. He was a calm little dog, coping with the hordes of children my parents had, letting babies clamber over him, but giving a warning growl when any older child took any liberties. He was always so excited to see when you came home from visiting away. That expression was just like him, only one-eyed 😁

Battered old dogs can be the loveliest. There is something about the "survivor" in them. Some people have said that dachshunds are bad with kids, but we had an awesome experience with our last one and Smallsteps. He was so patient with her, no matter what she did.

Tonight, we had our "loan dog" visit so they could meet and it was awesome! After a tentative start, it looks like they will become good friends :)

Look what you made me do - check out the dog rescue site and they have these two little cuties 😂:
