Stop polluting and start living.

in Reflectionsyesterday

During my recent broad trip, a dense white smoke from the ground at a distant reminded me of the continous tussle between Delhi and Haryana about Air pollution. Delhi attributes a significant portion of its severe winter air pollution to the practice of stubble burning (known as parali) in the neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana. But if you take a closer look, there is not the entire farm which was on fire. But is it good to blame the farmers for pollution?

The issue is part of a larger, complex problem involving multiple pollution sources, including vehicular and industrial emissions, dust from construction, and local garbage burning within Delhi. However, the Delhi government often highlights stubble burning as a major, episodic, external factor that exacerbates the problem, leading to a political blame game with the neighboring state governments. Farmers in Punjab and Haryana burn millions of tons of rice straw annually to quickly clear their fields for the next wheat crop due to a short window between harvests. This rapid, large-scale burning releases huge amounts of harmful gases and particulate matter into the atmosphere simultaneously. The smoke from these farm fires, combined with specific winter meteorological conditions, creates a thick, toxic smog.

Looking at the blame game between the two states over smoke, I was wondering what has happened over the use of so many bombs and ammunition in the different parts of the world. Be it Israel-Gaza or Russia-ukraine or any other countries who were involved in war since years. Aren't the smoke, dust and gases caused in increasing the air pollution level. Modern warfare's impact extends far beyond immediate casualties, leaving a complex and widespread legacy of environmental contamination and degradation. Explosions release large amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere, including particulate matter, black carbon, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds. Fires caused by bombings of oil fields, industrial sites, and infrastructure create massive smoke plumes that can affect air quality over vast, even transboundary, areas. Why noone raises concern over these issue.

The internal state war is ongoing since ages. I have seen that the Delhi government has alwsys came out with these excuses. Because of this concern, they eventually ban burning firecrackers during Diwali. But noone have the courage to raise these concern at the international level where the causlaities and environmental issues are more. Bombs and war gases at war fronts result in significant and severe environmental pollution. But noone is bothered to even think over it. What you think, is it justifiable to blame the poor farmers for everything ? Or there are issues other than subtle burning that may cause severe air pollution.

In good faith - Peace!!
