Hello, Hello internet people! I don't know if you remember but, some months ago (when I was still in my country) I made a seedbed in which I planted cucumbers and later posted some progress. My mother took care of the plant when I had to travel and I was finally very happy when she sent me the pictures of the result of our effort because the plant already gave its first harvest.
¡Hola, Hola gente de internet! No sé si lo recuerdan pero, hace algunos meses (cuando aún estaba en mi país) yo elaboré un semillero en el que sembré pepinos y posteriormente posteé algunos progresos. Mi madre se quedó a cargo de la planta cuando yo tuve que viajar y me puse muy contenta finalmente cuando me envió las fotografías del resultado de nuestro esfuerzo porque la planta ya dio su primera cosecha.
It all started here, in a cardboard egg carton, which due to the material it is made of is perfect for making a seedbed. I put some compost in it and in each of the spaces I sowed a cucumber seed.
Todo comenzó aquí, en una caja de cartón para huevos, ya que debido al material del que está hecha es perfecta para elaborar un semillero. Le puse un poco de tierra abonada y en cada una de los espacios sembré una semilla de pepinos.
Can you imagine how I felt when a few days later I started to see the first sprouts? It was a wonderful feeling to know that life was literally being created there. The soil was drying out very quickly (as it's very hot in the city where I lived in my country) so I would moisten the soil a little in the mornings and evenings.
¿Pueden imaginar lo que sentí cuando a los pocos días comencé a ver los primeros brotes? Fue una sensación maravillosa el saber que allí, literalmente se estaba creando vida. La tierra se secaba muy rápido (ya que en la ciudad donde vivía en mi país hace mucho calor) por lo tanto yo mojaba un poco la tierra por las mañanas y por las tardes.
When you make a seedbed, you have to make sure you sow a lot of seeds as for some reason not all of them survive, in my case only a couple of sprouts survived which I decided to transplant (on 23 January this year) into much bigger pots, because the little soil in the egg carton was no longer enough for them.
Cuando haces un semillero, debes asegurarte de sembrar muchas semillas ya que por alguna razón no todas sobreviven, en mi caso solo sobrevivieron un par de brotes a los cuales decidí trasplantar (el 23 de enero de este año) a unas macetas mucho más grandes, porque la poca tierra del cartón de huevos ya no eran suficiente.
On the eighth of February (a few days before I left) I was very happy because look how much my plants had already grown and the first yellow flowers had already appeared. These flowers are male and therefore sterile, but later on they sprout white flowers (female) from which the fruit will start to emerge.
El ocho de febrero (pocos días antes de irme) yo estaba muy contenta porque miren cuanto ya habían crecido mis plantas y además, ya les habían salido las primeras flores amarillas. Este tipo de flores son masculinas y por lo tanto estériles, pero después les brotan las flores blancas (femeninas) de las cuales comenzarán a emerger los frutos.
From here on my mother took care of my plants because the day came when I had to travel and for reasons of destiny everything was very sudden. She built what is known in gardening as a "Entutorado" which is a kind of grid or net made of wire in which the plant will be attached as it grows. The growth of cucumber plants is amazingly fast, look at the size it was on the 13th of February.
A partir de aquí mi madre se hizo cargo de mis platas porque me llegó el día de viajar y por motivos del destinos todo fue muy repentino. Ella construyó lo que en jardinería se conoce como un "Entutorado" que es una especie de rejilla o red hecha de alambre en el cual la planta se irá sujetando a medida que crezca. El crecimiento de las plantas de pepino es asombrosamente rápido, miren el tamaño que tenía el 13 de frebrero.

It was very exciting to see the whole process and the best thing about it was that it happened very, very fast, look how huge the plants were already on the 17th of February and the first fruits were already starting to emerge, although I was surprised that they did it from the yellow flowers and not from the white ones as I was used to see and it was something I knew from the research I did.
Era muy emocionante ver todo ese proceso y lo mejor de todo es que sucedía muy pero muy rápido, miren como ya estaban de enormes las plantas el 17 de febrero y ya comenzaban a emerger los primeros frutos, aunque me sorprendió que lo hicieran desde las flores amarillas y no de las blancas como ya estaba acostumbrada a ver y era algo que yo sabía mediante investigaciones que hice.

Then I noticed (from the photos my mum sent me) that some of those little cucumbers started to deteriorate and die, so, according to the internet research I did, all those spoiled fruits had to be removed, so that the plant wouldn't concentrate its nutrients on them, so my mum set about cutting them off.
Luego me di cuenta (por las fotos que mi mamá me enviaba) de que algunos de esos pequeños pepinos comenzaron a deteriorarse y a morir, entonces, según las investigaciones por internet que hice, todos esos frutos estropeados debían retirarse, para que la planta no concentrara sus nutrientes en ellos, así que mi mamá se dedicó a cortarlos.

Suddenly... Voila! There was a white flower (i.e. the female flower, which is fertile) the fruits of the yellow flowers die because they are infertile, but although my mother and I had only discovered one white flower, we put all our faith in it.
De pronto... ¡Voila! Allí estaba una flor blanca (es decir, la flor femenina, la cual es fértil) los frutos de las flores amarillas mueren porque son infértiles, pero aunque mi madre y yo solo habíamos descubierto una flor blanca, pusimos toda nuestra fe en ella.

On 26 February, look at the size of the plant where the white flower was. Huge!
El 26 de febrero miren las dimensiones que había tomado la planta donde estaba la flor blanca. ¡Enorme!
Look what my mum found on the first of March while installing the hose to water the plants! She immediately removed the hose because she noticed that the little cucumber with the white flower (the only one) was already a bit bigger and the hose was stepping on it.
Miren lo que mi mamá encontró el primero de marzo mientras instalaba la manguera para regar las plantas ¡Wow! Enseguida quitó la manguera de ahí porque se dio cuenta de que el pequeño pepino de la flor blanca (el único) ya estaba un poco más grande y la manguera lo pisaba.
It's impressive how fast this cucumber grew, in an absolutely organic and homemade process as you have been able to see, as the soil is only fertilised with compost. Look how big it was on the 4th of March.
Es impresionante la velocidad a la que crecía este pepino, en un proceso absolutamente orgánico y casero como han podido comprobar, pues la tierra está abonada tan solo con composta. Miren lo grande que estaba el día 4 de marzo.
On 7 March it had grown even more, look how the white flower is degenerating as the cucumber grows.
El 7 de marzo había crecido todavía más, miren como la flor blanca se va degenerando a medida que el pepino crece.
Yesterday, 14 March was the big harvest day, the cucumber had finally rounded out at the end, had lost the white flower and some yellow lines started to emerge at both ends.(Don't think that black thing over there is a snake haha it's just a rope that my mum uses to help hold the plant down)
Ayer, 14 de marzo fue el gran día de cosecha, el pepino finalmente ya se había redondeado en la punta final, había perdido la flor blanca y comenzaron a emerger algunas líneas amarillas en ambos extremos (No crean que eso negro de ahí es una serpiente jaja es solo una cuerda con la que mi mamá ayuda a sujetar la planta)
This is the ideal time to harvest cucumbers, because if we harvest them when they are completely yellow, i.e. ripe, then their taste will be bitter.
Ese es el momento idónea para cosechar los pepino ya que si lo hacemos cuando estén totalmente amarillos, es decir, maduros, entonces su sabor será amargo.
Then my mum and sister proceeded to harvest it, cutting off the stalk. By the way! I think I forgot to tell you that this cucumber is a French type.
Entonces mi mamá y mi hermana procedieron a cosecharlo, cortando el tallo. ¡Por cierto! Creo que olvidé decirles que este pepino es del tipo francés.
Let's hope that soon more and more white flowers will start to emerge so that there will be more cucumbers, in the meantime Let's prepare a delicious salad with this unique harvest.
Esperemos que muy pronto comiencen a emerger más y más flores blancas para que hayan más pepinos, mientras tanto ¡A preparar una deliciosa ensalada con esta única cosecha.

wow aqui en casa tambien tenemos nuestra huerta, es algo placentero ver crecer tus propias verduras, tambien tenemos un arbol de peras, hace un año nos dio cerca de 5 kilos de peras, esperemos este año duplique esa cantidad.
Siempre he querido tener un peral o un manzano pero por el calor de mi ciudad no he cumplido el sueño hahahah :D

Me alegra mucho que te haya gustado el resultado de tu esfuerzo inicial, (soy testigo de cuanto cuidaste tus plantas antes de viajar y como lo sigues haciendo desde la distancia, investigando todo lo que puedes sobre plantas y sus cuidados) No te preocupes, que están en buenas manos. Mi mamá disfrutó mucho la ensalada y está muy contenta porque ya sabes que ella y tú son las únicas a las que les gusta el pepino, jeje.
Hahahaha creo que con ese tamaño le quedó como para tres ensaladas hahaha. Espero volver y poder comer pepinos o que ya hayan maracuyá
