The order Crocodylia is located in the class Reptilia, which includes 23 species (recognized in the world) distributed in three families: Crocodylidae, Alligatoridae and Gavialidae. In South America there are seven species of which five are present in Venezuela. In the Crocodylidae family the Orinoco crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius) and the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus), and in the Alligatoridae family the Cuvier’s dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus), the smooth-fronted caiman (Paleosuchus trigonatus) and the (Caiman crocodilus). The species in the photographs corresponds to the common caiman (Caiman crocodilus).
En la clase Reptilia se ubica el orden Crocodylia, que incluye a 23 especies (reconocidas en el mundo) distribuidas en tres familias: Crocodylidae, Alligatoridae y Gavialidae. En Suramérica existen siete especies de las cuales cinco están presentes en Venezuela. En la familia Crocodylidae el caimán del Orinoco (Crocodylus intermedius) y el caimán de la costa (Crocodylus acutus), y en la familia Alligatoridae el babo morichalero (Paleosuchus palpebrosus), el babo negro (Paleosuchus trigonatus) y la baba o babo (Caiman crocodilus). La especie en las fotografías corresponde a la baba (Caiman crocodilus).
The common caiman is a small-sized species. At birth they measure about 22-25 centimeters in total length. Males can reach a length of 2.50-2.80 meters, while females generally do not exceed 1.80 meters.
La baba es una especie de pequeño tamaño. Al nacer miden alrededor de 22-25 centímetros de longitud total. Los machos pueden alcanzar una longitud de 2,50-2,80 metros, mientras que las hembras generalmente no superan los 1,80 metros.
The common caiman has a characteristic transverse border before to the eyes, which extends between the eye orbits (an edge between the eyes), and that is why it is sometimes known by the common name “spectacled caiman” .
La baba presenta un característico borde transversal anterior a los ojos, que se extiende entre las órbitas oculares (una arista entre los ojos), y por eso a veces se le conoce con el nombre común “caimán de anteojos”.
In Venezuela, the common caiman occupies a wide variety of aquatic environments. Its presence has been noted in rivers, streams, lakes, flood plains, reservoirs and channels, where it builds its nests with living or dead plant matter, decomposing organic remains and soil that are dragged with its hind legs to form a mound.
En Venezuela, la baba ocupa una amplia variedad de ambientes acuáticos. Se ha señalado su presencia en ríos, quebradas, lagos, planicies inundables, embalses y canales, en los que construye sus nidos con materia vegetal viva o muerta, restos orgánicos en descomposición y tierra que son arrastrados con las patas traseras hasta formar un montículo.
Common caimans in all their growth stages feed on fish, shrimp and insects but their diet changes with the size of the individuals. Insects are the main food in the diet of juveniles, shrimp in sub-adults and fish in adults. Vegetable material has been found in their stomachs that has been accidentally ingested when they catch their preys, in greater quantity in juveniles because they prefer superficial areas covered with vegetation, compared to the larger ones that forage for their food in open waters.
Las babas en todos sus estados de crecimiento se alimentan de peces, camarones e insectos pero su dieta va cambiando con el tamaño de los individuos. Los insectos son el principal alimento en la dieta en los juveniles, los camarones en los subadultos y los peces en los adultos. En sus estómagos se ha encontrado material vegetal que ha sido ingerido accidentalmente cuando atrapan a sus presas, en mayor cantidad en juveniles porque prefieren zonas superficiales cubiertas de vegetación, en comparación con los de mayor tamaño que buscan su alimento en aguas abiertas.
