The other day the little man caught the first smallmouth bass!
Baby Smallmouth
Smallmouth bass are a hell of a lot of fun fish to catch. They are aggressive and very acrobatic in their flopping around when you hook them! If you are a fisherman and are familiar with the bass variety, you know that small mouth are a hell of a fish. I haven’t been able to catch any for many years, we would catch them when we would go fishing in Maine with a family friend at his lake house but other than that we wouldn’t really have much opportunity to get them.
When the little man and I were out fishing the other day we tried a new spot for us, one I haven’t been to in many years: the Concord river. It’s a pretty large body of water that runs for many miles in mass and New Hampshire. My dad was nervous to drive his boat on it because it has some parts that are quite shallow so we would only go with a friend on his boat since he was familiar with it. We were driving by it looking for another place to go fishing and I said what the hell let’s give the concord a try! It turned out to be the best fishing we had that day, not great but better than nothing lol.
Smallmouth bass are a bit tricky to identify when they are younger but according to the inter webs, source the easiest ways to identify them are by their color and direction of the lines that run along them. Largemouth bass have horizontal lines or patterns across their bodies and obviously a larger mouth but the smallies have vertical lines going down their body which we can see here. They are also a lot darker and usually brown, with largemouth more green. These aren’t guaranteed rules for the fish since conditions vary but it seems like this was pretty accurate for this one! The fish was very dark in color and had the vertical lines going down it, with a bit of a smaller mouth than the baby largemouth we caught a few times this year and last year. The colors on it were also really cool, it had these orange flakes on its fins and some other colors near it’s gills.
The little man was excited to catch a fish that he could hold himself, the bigger ones he’s not strong enough or a bit scared to hold but these sized ones here are just right so that was nice.
He got the perfect spot to keep the fish healthy as well! Right on the side of the lip so that it didn’t send the hook into its stomach and end up killing the fish. We had some good luck with the small group of them that were here, we caught three but I don’t know if it was two of them or three fish in the same spot. Had a lot of fun in this small area!

Thanks for the support! We love to fish, we don't eat any of them yet and would only eat something like trout but it's a lot of fun to catch and release them!
