A Stowaway in my Lettuce: Terrestrial Slug or Gastropod Mollusk || Un Polizón en mi lechuga: Babosa Terrestre o Molusco Gasterópodo

Welcome Dear Photography Lovers

My goodness, a slug!... that was my reaction these days, when while I was cleaning a lettuce plant to make a delicious salad, I found a small slug. I admit, I was not very pleased with the finding, but unlike other opportunities, this time, I was also very curious to learn about this curious little animal. So, I put aside for a moment the preparation of the salad, looked for my camera, and did what I like the most, I took a lot of pictures of the little stowaway of my lettuce.

After I finished taking pictures of my little model, I decided to put it in my garden, I don't know if it was the best thing for my plants, because well, apparently, they are a bit harmful. But before we talk about bad things, let's find out together what exactly slugs are, because to be honest I'm not very clear. It turns out that land slugs belong to an order called Pulmonata and just like snails, they are gastropod mollusks, but unlike them, slugs don't have shells. Or at least not in a visible way, since some species have a kind of shell, but inside.

In detail, you can see that in its small head has 2 pairs of antennae, the upper ones are called optical tentacles, they are larger and have eyes at the end, which are also tactile and olfactory organs. The lower ones, which are closer to the mouth, are called sensory tentacles, these are smaller, on the other hand, in the case of the specimen I show you, it measures approximately 2 centimeters. But, depending on the species, the elongated body of this nocturnal animal can measure between 1 and 15 cm long.

Regarding their life cycle, level of activity, growth and reproduction, not only depends on the species, but also these aspects are directly linked to climatic conditions. Therefore, their behavior at a general level is very variable, and will depend on the humidity levels and temperature of the environment where they are found. For example, if the environment is very dry, these little animals cannot produce their characteristic mucus, making it impossible for them to move.

As I already mentioned, its movement depends on a fluid produced by its body, which is a kind of mucus excreted by a gland that covers its entire body. Not only does it serve as a moisturizer, but also, thanks to it, they can glide very slowly, advancing an average of 4 to 7 meters a day. If we talk about their diet, they normally eat during the night, and have a voracious appetite, being able to ingest the equivalent of half their weight. On the other hand, its diet is based mainly on live or dead plant material, although in reality, it is omnivorous, so it also enjoys eating animal waste.

Finally, I will present some curious details about this little friend. First, it is the only amphibious terrestrial gastropod, that is, if necessary, it is able to survive also in water. This quality allows it to move through freshwater currents, even its eggs can also survive and even hatch underwater, and then emerge to the surface. They have a very short life cycle, which at most, can reach a year and a half of life, however, they can live up to 5 generations in this period, with the peculiarity that even several generations can be alive at the same time.

You made the little demon slug look so very cute and harmless in your photographs! Nothing cute about these bad boys that continue to ruinmy vegetation the past several years.

I cannot find a natural way to deter their appetite. We have a Siberian husky so the one remedy of leaving beer in a shallow pan is not an option. Crumbled egg sheels are not working. Next I'm teying epsom salt as I prefer not using harmful pesticides. Any suggestions, Hivians?
