Queridos lectores, siempre es un placer estar de vuelta compartiendo un poco de mi pasión por la fotografía, además, de un poco de información interesante que suelo encontrar en la web, sobre los protagonistas de mis fotografías. En esta ocasión les comparto unas capturas que realice a la flor de una de las plantas en el jardín de la casa de mi hermana, ubicada en la ciudad de Maturín, estado Monagas, Venezuela.
Dear readers, it is always a pleasure to be back sharing a little of my passion for photography, as well as some interesting information that I usually find on the web, about the protagonists of my photographs. This time I share with you some pictures I took of the flower of one of the plants in the garden of my sister's house, located in the city of Maturin, Monagas state, Venezuela.
Como pueden observar, esta inflorescencia es sumamente curiosa, tiene la forma de alguna especie de ave. Quien le obsequio la planta a mi hermana, le dijo que era una planta de cúrcuma, pero, mi hermana tenía sus dudas al respecto. Lo cierto es, que, para quitarme de dudas, decidí indagar y resulta, que mi hermana tenía razón, en realidad a esta planta la llaman comúnmente "Avecilla". Aunque, ese no es el único nombre con el que se le conoce, pico de loro, Flor de Loro, Flor de Periquito, Plátano de Loro, "Platanillo" y Falsa Ave del Paraíso, son algunos de los nombres más populares, con el que se le conoce.
As you can see, this inflorescence is extremely curious, it has the shape of some kind of bird. The person who gave the plant to my sister told her that it was a turmeric plant, but my sister had her doubts about it. The truth is that, to remove my doubts, I decided to investigate and it turns out that my sister was right, in fact this plant is commonly called "Avecilla". Although, that is not the only name by which it is known, Parrot's Beak, Parrot Flower, Parakeet Flower, Parrot Banana, "Platanillo" and False Bird of Paradise, are some of the most popular names with which it is known.
Ahora, si hablamos en términos científicos, el nombre correcto de esta planta integrante de la familia de las Heliconiaceae y nativa de las selvas y bosques tropicales de Centro y Sur América es Heliconia Psittacorum. Es una del centenar de especies que agrupa el género de las Heliconias, y en la actualidad su cultivo se ha diseminado por muchas regiones del planeta por su extensivo uso como planta ornamental. Se caracteriza por ser una especie herbácea perenne muy vigorosa, que se adapta fácilmente y se desarrolla de forma erguida alcanzando una altura total que oscila entre el metro y los 3 metros. Posee un crecimiento rápido, extendiéndose de forma horizontal a través de la producción de rizomas, debido a esta característica, se debe tener cuidado si no queremos que termine invadiendo espacios no deseados, en nuestro jardín.
Now, if we speak in scientific terms, the correct name of this plant, a member of the Heliconiaceae family and native to the jungles and tropical forests of Central and South America, is Heliconia Psittacorum. It is one of the hundred or so species that make up the Heliconias genus, and nowadays its cultivation has spread to many regions of the planet due to its extensive use as an ornamental plant. It is characterized for being a very vigorous herbaceous perennial species, which adapts easily and develops erect, reaching a total height of between one and three meters. It has a rapid growth, spreading horizontally through the production of rhizomes, because of this feature, care must be taken if we do not want to end up invading unwanted spaces in our garden.
Su bello follaje siempre verdes, esta conformado por grandes hojas de forma alargada que terminan en forma puntiaguda. Cada hoja, se encuentran soportadas por un peciolo rígido, y llegan a medir entre 15 y 60 cm de largo y en cuanto al ancho oscila entre los 6 y 12 cm. La parte central de la hoja es atravesada por un prominente nervio, que al verlas me recuerdan las hojas de las plantas de plátano o bananas.
Its beautiful evergreen foliage is made up of large elongated leaves that end in a pointed shape. Each leaf is supported by a rigid petiole, and can measure between 15 and 60 cm in length and in width between 6 and 12 cm. The central part of the leaf is crossed by a prominent nerve, which when I see them reminds me of the leaves of banana plants or bananas.
Bajo condiciones ideales, una vez que la planta alcanza la madurez se caracteriza por poseer una floración que puede extenderse durante todo el año. Junto al largo periodo de durabilidad de la inflorescencia hace a esta especie muy atractivas en el ámbito ornamental. Además, sus exóticas inflorescencias una vez cortadas, son muy longevas, durando entre 2 y 3 semanas, razón por la que son también, muy utilizadas en floristerías para la elaboración de ramos florales. Ahora, en lo que respecta a las características de las inflorescencias, estas emergen en forma de racimos en medio de un grupo de hojas y miden alrededor de 3 a 15 cm. Los racimos, están conformados por un grupo de 3 a 9 flores hermafroditas, envueltas en brácteas cuyo color pueden ser rosadas, anaranjadas o amarillas. Algo interesante sobre esta inflorescencia, a diferencia de lo que comúnmente ocurre, en este caso que lo realmente atractivo de estas inflorescencias son llamativas brácteas de vistosos colores.
Under ideal conditions, once the plant reaches maturity it is characterized by a flowering period that can extend throughout the year. Together with the long period of durability of the inflorescence makes this species very attractive in the ornamental field. In addition, its exotic inflorescences, once cut, are very long-lived, lasting between 2 and 3 weeks, which is why they are also widely used in flower shops for the preparation of floral bouquets. Now, regarding the characteristics of the inflorescences, these emerge in the form of clusters in the middle of a group of leaves and measure about 3 to 15 cm. The clusters are formed by a group of 3 to 9 hermaphrodite flowers, wrapped in bracts whose color can be pink, orange or yellow. Something interesting about this inflorescence, unlike what commonly occurs, in this case that the real attraction of these inflorescences are showy bracts of bright colors.
Por último, quería comentarles que la forma de multiplicación de esta planta, es a través de sus pequeñas semillas. Estas se desarrollan dentro de un fruto de forma esférica de 1 centímetro de diámetro, el cual, inicialmente es de color amarillo o naranja y al madurarse se torna de color azul oscuro. Finally, I wanted to tell you that the way of multiplication of this plant is through its small seeds. These develop inside a spherical fruit of 1 centimeter in diameter, which initially is yellow or orange and when ripe becomes dark blue.
