Saludos queridos lectores, esta última semana nuevamente he estado un poco ausente, mis actividades del mundo real me han tenido bastante ocupada, han sido días muy activos. La formalización de la inscripción del nuevo año escolar de mis hijas, y las actividades para el concierto virtual en el que participara mi hija mayor, ocuparon bastante mi tiempo. Por otro lado, también se juntó con la culminación y entrega de notas del semestre en la universidad y la finalización de un seminario a nivel de postgrado que estaba dictando, en fin, han sido días full trabajo.
Greetings dear readers, this last week I have been a little absent again, my real-world activities have kept me quite busy, they have been very active days. The formalization of the registration for the new school year of my daughters, and the activities for the virtual concert in which my eldest daughter will participate, took up a lot of my time. On the other hand, it also came together with the culmination and delivery of grades for the semester at the university and the completion of a graduate level seminar that I was teaching, in short, they have been full work days.
Pero gracias a Dios ya formalmente estoy de vacaciones, espero poder descansar un poco más, y dedicar más tiempo a compartir con ustedes. Además, tengo planeado realizar unas cuantas manualidades, seguro se las compartiré también. Pero bueno, por ahora hoy vengo a mostrarle otras de esas maravillas que nos regala la naturaleza, en esta oportunidad les traigo un arbusto cuyas flores y frutos lo hacen muy atractivo a nivel ornamental, se trata de la Duranta, nombre con el que se le conoce popularmente.
But, thank God, I am now formally on vacation, I hope to be able to rest a little more, and dedicate more time to share with you. Besides, I plan to make a few crafts, I'm sure I'll share them with you too. But well, for now today I come to show you another of those wonders that nature gives us, this time I bring you a shrub whose flowers and fruits make it very attractive ornamentally, it is the Duranta, name by which it is popularly known.
Duranta Erecta, es el nombre con el que se le conoce a nivel científico a este arbusto de la familia de las Verbenáceas y dicho nombre fue asignado en honor a un botánico de origen italiano. Es una de las 30 especies que agrupa el género de las Durantas, encontrándose diseminadas a lo largo de las zonas tropicales y subtropicales del continente americano. Sin embargo, debido a su atractivo, es muy cotizado en el ámbito ornamental, lo que le ha permitido naturalizarse en otros continentes. Duranta no es la única denominación común que se le atribuye a esta planta, Flor Celeste, Garbancillo, Flor del Cielo, Heliotropo, Té Amarillo, Corona de Novia y Gota de Rocío Dorada, son algunos con los que se identifica también.
Duranta Erecta, is the name with which it is known at scientific level to this shrub of the family of the Verbenáceas and this name was assigned in honor to a botanist of Italian origin. It is one of the 30 species that group the genus of Durantas, being scattered throughout the tropical and subtropical zones of the American continent. However, due to its attractiveness, it is highly valued in the ornamental field, which has allowed it to naturalize in other continents. Duranta is not the only common name attributed to this plant, Celeste Flower, “Garbancillo”, Sky Flower, Heliotrope, Yellow Tea, Bridal Crown and Golden Dew Drop, are some with which it is also identified.
Este arbusto perennifolio, aunque se considera originario de sur América, también lo podemos encontrar en Centroamérica y las Antillas. Se caracteriza por poseer un maravilloso follaje en verde brillante, que junto a sus prolíferos ramos de delicadas flores celeste y sus racimos de pequeños frutos en un brillante amarillo dorado lo hace sumamente atractivo a nivel ornamental en el ámbito de la jardinería. Por otro lado, sus atractivos racimos de bayas además de darle un toque muy llamativo al arbusto, le han dado el origen a uno de sus nombres comunes “Gota de Rocío Dorada”.
This evergreen shrub, although considered native to South America, can also be found in Central America and the Antilles. It is characterized by its wonderful bright green foliage, which together with its prolific bunches of delicate light blue flowers and its clusters of small fruits in a bright golden yellow makes it extremely attractive at an ornamental level in the field of gardening. On the other hand, its attractive clusters of berries, in addition to giving the shrub a very striking touch, have given rise to one of its common names " Golden Dew Drop ".
Este arbusto tropical y de uso decorativo posee un primoroso follaje, muy ramificado y de crecimiento rápido, llegando a alcanzar hasta 7 metros de altura aproximadamente. Resulta ideal para creas setos de forma individual, o sembrándolo en grupo de arbustos permite privacidad en el lugar donde se plante. No tienen grandes exigencias en cuanto a mantenimiento, por lo que pueden ser plantado en masetas y ser podados al estilo de topiarios. Incluso, en la actualidad, son usados con frecuencia para crear Bonsay, eso sí, en todos los casos, deben estar expuesta a pleno sol, para que se desarrolle adecuadamente. Ahora, si bien es cierto, que no es muy exigente en cuanto a sus cuidados, se debe estar pendiente de proporcionarle un regado moderado.
This tropical and decorative shrub has a beautiful foliage, very branched and fast growing, reaching up to 7 meters in height approximately. It is ideal for creating hedges individually, or by planting it in a group of shrubs it allows privacy in the place where it is planted. They are not very demanding in terms of maintenance, so they can be planted in pots and pruned in the style of topiaries. Even today, they are often used to create Bonsay, but in all cases, they must be exposed to full sun, so that they develop properly. Now, although it is true that it is not very demanding in terms of care, you should be aware of providing a moderate watering.
A nivel general este arbusto Angiosperma, tiene una forma natural relativamente ovoidal muy agradable, si se quiere mantener bien redondeado, necesitará podado frecuente por su rápido crecimiento. Pero, se debe tener cuidado al manipularla, porque, sus ramas más gruesas pueden o no, tener espinas. Por otro lado, en el caso de esta especie en particular, sus hojas son simples y en un tono verde brillante. Son simples y de forma elíptica, encontrándose contrapuestas a lo largo de las ramas, llegan a medir de largo como máximo 7 y de ancho hasta alrededor de 3 cm. Otro aspecto que se debe conocer y tener presente, es que sus hojas son toxicas para los humanos y algunos animales e insectos.
Generally speaking, this Angiosperm shrub has a very nice natural relatively ovoid shape. If you want to keep it well rounded, it will need frequent pruning because of its rapid growth. However, care should be taken when handling it, because its thicker branches may or may not have thorns. On the other hand, in the case of this particular species, its leaves are simple and bright green. They are simple and elliptical in shape, and are found opposite each other along the branches, reaching a maximum length of 7 cm and a width of about 3 cm. Another aspect to know and keep in mind is that its leaves are toxic to humans and some animals and insects.
Este arbusto también es muy valorado por sus abundantes inflorescencias, sus espigas de pequeñas y delicadas flores azules, lo hacen sumamente atractivo, en el ámbito ornamental. Como pueden ver en las imágenes que hoy comparto, sus pequeñas flores son de un maravilloso color azul lila, que resultan muy atractivas para las mariposas y colibríes. Sus fragantes flores en forma de campanas terminando en cinco pétalos, son relativamente pequeñas oscilando su tamaño entre 1 y 2 centímetros aproximadamente. Un detalle muy llamativo y encantador es que, en la parte central de dos pétalos consecutivos, presentan una línea en color morado fuerte, que resalta primorosamente.
This shrub is also highly valued for its abundant inflorescences, its spikes of small and delicate blue flowers, make it extremely attractive, ornamentally. As you can see in the images I share today, its small flowers are a wonderful lilac blue color, which are very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Its fragrant bell-shaped flowers ending in five petals, are relatively small ranging in size between 1 and 2 centimeters approximately. A very striking and charming detail is that, in the central part of two consecutive petals, they have a strong purple line, which stands out beautifully.
Finalmente, cuando sus flores son fecundadas, dan origen a primorosos racimos de pequeños frutos lobulosos del tamaño de un garbanzo, que al madurar se tornan de un hermoso amarillo dorado. Pero, aunque estos frutos son muy atractivos, al igual que sus hojas, poseen compuestos en su estructura química, que resultan letales para los humanos, animales, e insectos. Aunque, para los pájaros estas jugosas bayas son muy atractivas y se deleitan alimentándose con ellas ya que, no resultan afectados por sus toxinas.
Finally, when its flowers are fertilized, they give rise to beautiful clusters of small lobular fruits the size of a chickpea, which when ripe turn a beautiful golden yellow. But, although these fruits are very attractive, like their leaves, they have compounds in their chemical structure that are lethal to humans, animals and insects. Birds, however, find these juicy berries very attractive and enjoy feeding on them because they are not affected by their toxins.
