Hola queridos amantes de la naturaleza, integrantes de esta maravillosa comunidad #AmazingNature, siempre es un gusto compartir con ustedes, el producto de mis indagaciones y fotografías sobre la naturaleza que me rodea. En esta ocasión el conjunto de fotografías que les mostraré, fueron producto de una de esas maravillosas casualidades, donde a veces estamos en el lugar apropiado en el momento justo. Como habrán podido notar, yo siempre estoy observando los espacios naturales que me rodean y en esta ocasión no iba con ninguna intención de tomar fotografías.
Hello dear nature lovers, members of this wonderful community #AmazingNature, it is always a pleasure to share with you, the product of my inquiries and photographs about the nature that surrounds me. This time the set of photographs that I will show you, were the product of one of those wonderful coincidences, where sometimes we are in the right place at the right time. As you may have noticed, I am always observing the natural spaces that surround me and on this occasion I had no intention of taking pictures.
Resulta que me encontraba, en el palacio de Justicia del Estado Anzoátegui, Venezuela, lugar que, por cierto, nunca había visitado. Me encontraba allí porque uno de mis tesistas de maestría presentaría su trabajo de grado y, además, era jurado de otro trabajo de grado que también se presentaría ese mismo día. El caso es, que mientras esperaba que se ultimaran los últimos detalles para empezar, decidí pasear por los alrededores, y me encontré la maravilla que pueden apreciar en las imágenes.
I happened to be in the Palace of Justice of the State of Anzoátegui, Venezuela, a place I had never visited before. I was there because one of my master's thesis students was going to present his thesis and, in addition, I was the jury of another thesis that would also be presented that same day. The thing is, while I was waiting for the last details to be finalized, I decided to walk around and I found the marvel that you can see in the pictures.
Se trata de las inflorescencias de una planta de palmera o palma como también se conoce de forma popular, de seguro la mayoría alguna vez ha visto este tipo de plantas que pertenece a la familia de las Arecáceas. Estas plantas de tallo único y leñoso en cuya punta agrupa sus grandes hojas a modo de una especie de corona resultan muy fáciles de identificar visualmente. Sin embargo, no muchos les prestan atención a sus bastones florales, pero en esta ocasión fueron precisamente sus espigas de pequeñas flores lo que llamó mi atención. Claro, además, de ese pequeño enjambre de abejas recolectoras que revoloteaban a su alrededor.
These are the inflorescences of a palm tree plant or palm as it is also popularly known, surely most of us have seen this type of plant that belongs to the Arecaceae family. These plants with a single, woody stem on the tip of which its large leaves are grouped together in a sort of crown are very easy to identify visually. However, not many people pay attention to their floral canes, but on this occasion, it was precisely their spikes of small flowers that caught my attention. Of course, in addition to the small swarm of foraging bees that fluttered around them.
Pero antes de entrar a hablar de las inflorescencias les comentaré un poco sobre estas plantas que habitan prolíferamente las zonas tropicales y templadas, de preferencias las regiones cálidas. Son muchas las especies que agrupa esta familia de plantas, algunas incluso de gran importancia económica, como los cocoteros, las palmas aceiteras, las datileras o las de palmito, por nombrar algunas.
But before talking about inflorescences, I will tell you a little about these plants that are prolific inhabitants of tropical and temperate zones, preferably in warm regions. There are many species in this family of plants, some even of great economic importance, such as coconut palms, oil palms, date palms or palmetto palms, to name a few.
Otras especies, como por ejemplo la que hoy les muestro, la Phoenix Canariensis su valor es a nivel ornamental. Siendo esta planta originaria de las Islas Canarias, de las más utilizada en el ámbito de la jardinería, debido principalmente, a su tolerancia al frio, los suelos con niveles de salinidad y largos períodos de sequía. Ahora, nivel general, en este caso particular, estamos hablando de una planta que posee un crecimiento moderado, alcanzando a medir hasta unos 20 metros de altura, pudiendo alcanzar su tallo un grosor de 10 metros de diámetro. Sus hojas por otro lado, poseen una forma pinnada, que asemejan grandes plumas arqueadas de color verde.
Other species, such as the one I show you today, the Phoenix Canariensis, its value is ornamental. Being this plant native to the Canary Islands, one of the most used in the field of gardening, mainly due to its tolerance to cold, soils with salinity levels and long periods of drought. Now, at a general level, in this particular case, we are talking about a plant that has a moderate growth, reaching up to 20 meters in height, and its stem can reach a thickness of 10 meters in diameter. Its leaves, on the other hand, have a pinnate shape, resembling large green arched feathers.
Ahora sí, pasemos a hablar un poco de las curiosas inflorescencias de esta planta, pero antes, debo aclarar, que existen algunas diferencias respecto al aspecto de las flores dependiendo de la especie. Pasemos entonces, a contarles algunos aspectos sobre las inflorescencias de la palmera Phoenix Canariensis. Lo primero a tener en cuenta, es que las inflorescencias de esta especie de palmera son de gran tamaño, y es una varilla floral la cual mientras se encuentra en desarrollo está envuelta en brácteas. Estas brácteas, normalmente son de consistencia dura lo que protege a la inflorescencia mientras aún no está madura.
Now, let's talk a little about the curious inflorescences of this plant, but first, I must clarify that there are some differences in the appearance of the flowers depending on the species. Let's tell you some aspects about the inflorescences of the Phoenix Canariensis palm. The first thing to keep in mind is that the inflorescences of this species of palm are large, and it is a floral rod which while it is developing is wrapped in bracts. These bracts are usually of hard consistency which protects the inflorescence while it is not yet mature.
Una vez la espiga florar ya esta completamente desarrollada, se abre esta especie de capullo que la protege y se despliegan los distintos espádices que agrupan las numerosas pequeñas florecillas. Las pequeñas flores están conformadas por 3 sépalos, 3 pétalos y 6 estambres y como pueden ver en las imágenes en el caso de esta especie, los sépalos son amarillos tendiendo a verde y los pétalos son color crema. Sin embargo, dependiendo de la especie de palmera, las flores pueden ser blancas, amarillas, verdosas o lila.
Once the flower spike is fully developed, this kind of cocoon that protects it opens and the different spadixes that group the numerous small flowers unfold. The small flowers are formed by 3 sepals, 3 petals and 6 stamens and as you can see in the images in the case of this species, the sepals are yellow tending to green and the petals are cream colored. However, depending on the palm species, the flowers can be white, yellow, greenish or lilac.
Por otro lado, en el caso de esta especie de palmera, el fruto es una drupa, que no es más que un fruto simple, es bastante pequeña y de forma ovalada. Son de color amarillo intenso con una corteza delgada y no es muy carnoso y dentro tiene una corteza fibrosa que protege la semilla.
On the other hand, in the case of this species of palm tree, the fruit is a drupe, which is nothing more than a simple fruit, it is quite small and oval in shape. They are deep yellow in color with a thin rind and are not very fleshy and inside has a fibrous rind that protects the seed.

I used to have areca in a pot and that's why I've seen this kind of inflorescence. Of course the flowers were much smaller than the flowers on your palm tree :-)

I know it was a different species. This palm tree does not grow freely in the Czech Republic :-)
