Look at the beauty that I share with you today, you don't know how pleasantly surprised I am by this beautiful plant, since I didn't know it and suddenly, I discovered it in the small square in front of my house. It turns out that one of these days, arriving home after looking for my girls at school, I was struck by what I thought were some yellow spikes. Because I was in a hurry, because I had to fix lunch, to go out again, in the afternoon to our commitments, I could not get closer to see what it was about.
Pero, irremediablemente se activó mi curiosidad, desde ese día cada vez que me asomaba al jardín de mi casa, inmediatamente, mi vista se dirigía a las intrigantes espigas que resaltaban en el verde intenso del terreno. Pasaron varios días, de bastante actividad y no tuve oportunidad de acercarme a ver de qué planta se trataba. Pero, un día llegando temprano a casa, no aguanté la tentación, ni siquiera entre a la casa, me bajé del carro y fui directo a lo que yo veía como unas espigas de alguna nueva lleva.
But irremediably my curiosity was activated, from that day on, every time I looked at the garden of my house, immediately, my sight was directed to the intriguing ears of corn that stood out in the intense green of the land. Several days went by, with a lot of activity, and I did not have the opportunity to get closer to see what plant it was. But, one day, arriving home early, I could not resist the temptation, I did not even enter the house, I got out of the car and went straight to what I saw as some ears of some new plant.
Para mi sorpresa, no era lo que me esperaba, era un pequeño árbol que no llegaba al metro de altura, del que emergían esas maravillosas inflorescencias que pueden ven en mis imágenes. Por supuesto, saque mi cámara y tome todas las fotos que pude, mientras, mis vecinos pasaban, mirándome como si estaba loca, metida en ese montón de monte, y tierra encharcada, jajaja. Claro, en el momento no me percaté de eso, me dejé llevar por la curiosidad, las consecuencias, mi ropa repleta de cadillos y mis zapatos de charco, pero, valió la pena.
To my surprise, it was not what I expected, it was a small tree that was less than a meter high, from which emerged those wonderful inflorescences that you can see in my pictures. Of course, I took out my camera and took as many pictures as I could, while my neighbors passed by, looking at me as if I was crazy, stuck in that pile of bush, and waterlogged earth, hahaha. Of course, I didn't realize it at the time, I let myself get carried away by curiosity, the consequences, my clothes full of hips and my puddle shoes, but it was worth it.
Al investigar sobre esta hermosa planta descubrí que su nombre científico es Senna alata y es una especie perteneciente a la familia Fabaceae y al género Senna. Para mi sorpresa, porque no la conocía, resulta, que esta planta es nativa de Venezuela; pero, su habita natural no es solo mi país, es originaria de toda la América Tropical. En la actualidad gracias a su extendido uso a nivel medicinal y ornamental, aunado a su capacidad de adaptación, su cultivo se ha extendido a las distintas zonas tropicales alrededor del mundo.
When researching about this beautiful plant I discovered that its scientific name is Senna alata and it is a species belonging to the Fabaceae family and to the genus Senna. To my surprise, because I did not know it, it turns out that this plant is native to Venezuela; but its natural habitat is not only my country, it is native to all of Tropical America. At present, thanks to its widespread medicinal and ornamental use, together with its ability to adapt, its cultivation has spread to different tropical areas around the world.
Dependiendo de la zona, de forma popular se le conoce por diversos nombres, entre ellos: mazorquilla, candelabro, Candelabro del emperador, bajagua, vela de navidad, buche de bacalao, guajabo, Flor del secreto, barajo, vela emperatriz, Rey del bosque, Guacamaya francesa, arbusto de la tiña, arbusto de la lombriz, mocoté, tarantantan, majagüillo y siete velas doradas, por nombrar algunos.
Depending on the area, it is popularly known by various names, among them: chandelier, chandelier of the emperor, "mazorquilla", bajagua, Christmas candle, "buche de bacalao", "guajabo", flower of the secret, "barajo", empress candle, king of the forest, French macaw, ringworm bush, worm bush, "mocoté", "tarantantantan", "majagüillo" and seven golden candles, to name a few.
Este arbusto, perenne y siempre verde se caracteriza por poseer un desarrollo rápido, llegando a alcanzar los 3 metros de altura y aproximadamente 2 metros de diámetro. Posee un tallo erecto en forma angular muy ramificado y leñoso de color verde, de donde, emergen, dispuestas en forma de espiral, sus largas hojas compuestas, que pueden llegar a sobrepasar, el medio metro de largo. Cada una de las hojas está conformada por entre 8 y 18 pares de hojitas más pequeñas, llamadas foliolos, que llegan a medir entre 5 y 16 cm de largo y de 3 a 9 cm de ancho.
This evergreen perennial shrub is characterized by its rapid development, reaching up to 3 meters in height and approximately 2 meters in diameter. It has an erect, angular, highly branched and woody green stem, from which emerge, arranged in a spiral shape, its long compound leaves, which can exceed half a meter in length. Each of the leaves is made up of between 8 and 18 pairs of smaller leaves, called leaflets, which measure between 5 and 16 cm long and 3 to 9 cm wide.
Es una planta ornamental muy apreciada en el ámbito de la jardinería, ya que posee, un exuberante follaje y una llamativa y abundante floración. Sus elegantes y erectas inflorescencias en forma de racimos, cuyo tamaño oscila entre los 15 y 60 cm de largo, están conformada por numerosas y delicadas flores en un hermoso y brillante color amarillo. Los pequeños capullos de flor antes de abrir, se encuentran protegidas por brácteas anaranjadas, que, va progresivamente caducando de abajo hacia arriba, dejando expuestas las delicadas flores que se asemejan a pequeños repollos amarillos. Cada flor, mide aproximadamente 3 cm de diámetro, posee 5 pétalos similares a uñas, que miden entre 15 y 23 mm y en el centro se encuentra una antena con dos estambres que pueden llegar a medir 13 mm de largo.
It is an ornamental plant very appreciated in the gardening field, since it has an exuberant foliage and a showy and abundant flowering. Its elegant and erect inflorescences in the form of clusters, whose size ranges between 15 and 60 cm long, are formed by numerous and delicate flowers in a beautiful and bright yellow color. The small flower buds, before opening, are protected by orange bracts, which, progressively deciduous from bottom to top, exposing the delicate flowers that resemble small yellow cabbages. Each flower measures approximately 3 cm in diameter, has 5 petals similar to nails, measuring between 15 and 23 mm and in the center is an antenna with two stamens that can measure up to 13 mm long.
En lo que respecta a los frutos de esta planta leguminosa, son vainas de forma alargada y recta, que llegan a medir aproximadamente 15 cm de largo y 1,5 de ancho. Inicialmente son de color verde, pero, en la medida que maduran se van tornando negruzcas. Las vainas, al completar su madurez se abren espontáneamente, dejando expuestas las numerosas semillas, de forma aplanada y triangular, poseen color pardo oscuro, y llegan a medir aproximadamente 8 mm de ancho.
The fruits of this leguminous plant are elongated and straight pods, which measure approximately 15 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. Initially they are green in color, but as they ripen, they turn blackish. The pods, upon maturity, open spontaneously, exposing the numerous seeds, flattened and triangular in shape, are dark brown in color, and measure approximately 8 mm wide.
En otro orden de ideas y para finalizar, como les comenté previamente, esta planta es muy popular por sus propiedades medicinales, entre las cuales se encuentran la fungicida, muy útiles para tratar distintas afecciones de la piel, además, también es ampliamente conocida por su efectos laxantes.
In another order of ideas and to finish, as I mentioned previously, this plant is very popular for its medicinal properties, among which are the fungicide, very useful for treating various skin conditions, in addition, it is also widely known for its laxative effects.
