Feliz y bendecido inicio de semana y de mes queridos lectores y amantes de la naturaleza. Este año ya casi termina, parece mentira, se fue, como agua entre las manos, ya estamos iniciando el penúltimo mes, pero les confieso que estoy anhelando que termine de una vez. Ha sido un año muy difícil, para mi familia y para mí, nos tocó atravesar pruebas muy duras, que a mí me dejaron huellas imborrables en la piel y el corazón.
Happy and blessed beginning of the week and of the month, dear readers and nature lovers. This year is almost over, it seems unbelievable, it is gone, like water between our hands, we are already beginning the penultimate month, but I confess that I am longing for it to end at once. It has been a very difficult year, for my family and for me, we had to go through very hard trials, which left indelible marks on my skin and my heart.
Pero, en otro orden de ideas, lo que realmente venía a comentarles es algo bastante curioso, que me paso hace unos días atrás, resulta, que me encontré tirado en el piso el animalito que hoy les muestro. No tengo, ni la remota idea, de lo que le paso al pobrecito, simplemente lo encontré así, deduzco, que le daría alguna especie de infarto, no sé. El caso, es que este lamentable incidente, me dio la oportunidad de poder observarlo al detalle. Les confieso, que su aspecto no es de mi agrado, aunque, mi esposo me dice que no hacen nada, por el contrario, son beneficiosos para nosotros los humanos.
But, in another order of ideas, what I really came to tell you is something quite curious, that happened to me a few days ago, it turns out, that I found lying on the floor the little animal that I show you today. I have no idea what happened to the poor thing, I just found him like that, I deduce that he had some kind of heart attack, I don't know. The fact is that this unfortunate incident gave me the opportunity to observe him in detail. I confess that his appearance is not to my liking, although my husband tells me that they do not do anything, on the contrary, they are beneficial to us humans.
De hecho, mi esposo tiene toda la razón, según lo que pude investigar, a diferencia de la creencia popular, son completamente inofensivo y, por el contrario, ayudan a mantener nuestros hogares libres de visitantes indeseados. Pero, díganme, de seguro todos ustedes, han vistos al menos una vez una de estas escurridizas lagartijas, de aspecto galáctico. Es más, sus grandes ojos dorados, parecen estar rellenos de escarcha, con esas negras pupilas, posicionadas verticalmente, que nos recuerdan mucho a los de los gatos. Es más, si no han tenido la oportunidad de verlas, porque realmente se la pasan escondidas, lo que, si deben haber escuchado, es el particular sonido que emiten.

But, tell me, surely all of you have at least once seen one of these elusive, galactic-looking lizards. What's more, their big golden eyes seem to be filled with frost, with those black, vertically positioned pupils that remind us a lot of cats. What's more, if you haven't had the opportunity to see them, because they really spend their time hiding, what you must have heard is the particular sound they emit.
Este, numeroso grupo de lagartijas conocidas comúnmente como Gecko, Dragón de la pared, Salamanquesa o Tuqueque, como se le conoce en el lugar donde vivo, son inquilinos habituales de nuestros hogares. Se mueven como centellas por los rincones de nuestras casas y más de una vez, nos han ocasionado un gran susto, al salir disparado, cuando movemos un cuadro, una caja o simplemente una cortina. En el ámbito científico, se le conoce por el nombre de Hemidactylus mabouia y Pertenecen a la especie Gecónido y al género de los Hemidactylus. Se han acostumbrado a habitar de forma armónica en entornos urbanos y aunque son originarios del continente africano, en la actualidad, los podemos encontrar en las distintas zonas cálidas alrededor del planeta.
This large group of lizards, commonly known as Geckos, Wall Dragons, Geckos or Tuqueque, as they are known where I live, are regular tenants of our homes. They move like lightning through the corners of our homes and more than once, they have caused us a great scare, when we move a picture, a box or simply a curtain. In the scientific field, they are known by the name of Hemidactylus mabouia and belong to the species Geconidae and to the genus Hemidactylus. They have become accustomed to live harmoniously in urban environments and although they are originally from the African continent, nowadays, we can find them in the different warm zones around the planet.
La mayoría lo desconoce, estos pequeños bichitos en nuestros hogares, son nuestros grandes aliados, cuando de control de plaga se habla, ya que, se comen las cucarachas, polillas, zancudos y moscas que irrumpen en nuestras casas. Ahora, también es necesario recalcar, que, si bien es cierto, que en nuestros ambientes urbanos los tuqueques son inofensivo, no necesariamente ocurre lo mismo en aquellos ambientes silvestre, donde no es una especie nativa. Ya que, al ser una especie invasora, podría convertirse en un riesgo para las especies nativa, volviéndose incluso en un problema de conservación para las especies nativas.

Now, it is also necessary to emphasize that, although it is true that in our urban environments tuqueques are harmless, it is not necessarily the same in those wild environments, where it is not a native species. Since it is an invasive species, it could become a risk for native species, even becoming a conservation problem for native species.
Hablando de su aspecto general, estos pequeños amiguitos, poseen una piel escamosa y rugosa, y poseen un color pardusco tendiendo a grisáceo, que le da la ventaja de poder mimetizarse con el territorio donde normalmente habitan. Medidos de hocico a cola, miden como máximo 12,7 centímetros y en proporción su cabeza y ojos son grandes respecto al resto del cuerpo. En cuanto al gran tamaño de ojos, así como, su peculiar apariencia, con pupilas elípticas verticales, que recuerdan a lo de los gatos, se debe a que son animales nocturnos. Necesitan estas características particulares para poder localizar sus presas a pesar de no contar con suficiente iluminación.
Speaking of their general appearance, these little friends have a scaly and rough skin, and have a brownish to grayish color, which gives them the advantage of being able to mimic the territory where they normally live. Measured from snout to tail, they measure a maximum of 12.7 centimeters and their head and eyes are large in proportion to the rest of the body. The large size of their eyes, as well as their peculiar appearance, with vertical elliptical pupils, reminiscent of cats, is due to the fact that they are nocturnal animals. Ahora, ustedes se preguntarán a que se debe la fabulosa habilidad de estos animalitos de sangre fría, de poder caminar por las paredes, bueno, como pueden ver en algunas de las imágenes que les muestro, sus dedos son planos, pero tiene una especie de protuberancias. Por mucho tiempo, se pensó que dichas protuberancias eran una especie de ventosas, con las cuales de adherían a las paredes, hoy en día, se ha descubierto, que esto no es así. Resulta que los científicos determinaron, que, en los pliegues de la palma de sus patas, se encuentra una especie de vellosidad muy especializada. Estos vellitos, son los que le da la gran capacidad de adherencia, permitiéndoles corretear por superficies tan lisas incluso, como el cristal de nuestras ventanas.
Now, you may wonder what is the reason for the fabulous ability of these little cold-blooded animals to walk on walls, well, as you can see in some of the images I show you, their toes are flat, but they have a kind of protuberances. For a long time, it was thought that these protuberances were a kind of suction cups, with which they adhere to the walls, today, it has been discovered that this is not so. It turns out that scientists have determined that in the folds of the palm of their paws, there is a kind of very specialized hairiness. These little hairs are what give them the great capacity of adherence, allowing them to run on surfaces as smooth as even the glass of our windows.
Por último, quería comentarles otra habilidad asombrosa que poseen estos animalitos, cuando se siente amenazados, de ser necesario son capaces de desprenderse voluntariamente de su cola. Pero no es solo eso, al igual que en caso de otros reptiles como las iguanas, su organismo es capaz de regenerar este miembro, haciendo que su cola les vuelve a crecer con el tiempo.
Finally, I wanted to tell you about another amazing ability that these little animals have, when they feel threatened, if necessary, they are able to voluntarily shed their tails. But that's not all, as in the case of other reptiles such as iguanas, their organism is capable of regenerating this limb, causing their tails to grow back over time.

Love these little guys, just wish they stopped shitting on the walls 😌, they eat mosquito and flies so they make me very happy in sharing the home with them... just don't leave a mess!
Here is one living in my kitchen currently, managed a quick snap last week! Tail is growing back must have had a territorial fight about who lived under the microwave oven....
