Siempre es un gusto estar de vuelta en esta genial comunidad amante de la asombrosa naturaleza que nos rodea. En esta oportunidad les traigo unas curiosas imágenes que pude captar el fin de semana pasado. No pude saber lo interesantes que resultarían, hasta que las vi en el computador. Seguramente, de forma inmediata notaron que el objetivo principal de mi fotografía es una pequeña araña. Pero, si observan bien la imagen, podrán notar, que mi modelo tiene entre sus patas una mosca, claro, el pequeño detalle, es que se trata de su almuerzo.

It's always a pleasure to be back in this great community that loves the amazing nature that surrounds us. This time I bring you some curious images that I was able to capture last weekend. I couldn't have known how interesting they would be until I saw them on the computer. Surely, you immediately noticed that the main subject of my photograph is a small spider. But, if you look closely at the image, you will notice that my model has a fly between its legs, of course, the small detail is that it is its lunch.

Imagino que acababa de matar a la pobre mosquita, cuando me interpuse en su camino y empecé a molestarla tomándole fotografías, que fastidiosa soy verdad, jajaja. Al ver el fruto de mi sesión fotográfica, me sorprendió mucho, que la cacería que mi amigo arácnido arrastraba entre sus patas, era prácticamente del mismo tamaño que él. Sin embargo, parecía cargarla como si no pesara casi nada, es un animalito pequeño pero muy fuerte. Aunque imagino que mucho lo sabrán, igualmente debo resaltar que las arañas no son insectos, estas pertenecen a la clase de los Arácnidos.

I guess I had just killed the poor little fly, when I got in its way and started to bother it by taking pictures, how annoying I am, hahaha. When I saw the fruit of my photo session, I was very surprised, that the hunt that my arachnid friend was dragging between his legs, was practically the same size as him. However, he seemed to carry it as if it weighed almost nothing, he is a small but very strong little animal. Although I imagine that many of you know this, I must point out that spiders are not insects, they belong to the class of Arachnids.

Ahora siendo más específicos, respecto al pequeño ejemplar arácnido que les muestro, este es conocido comúnmente como Araña Saltarina o Araña Saltarina Pantropical y pertenece a la familia de las Salticidae. Esta especie Araneomorfa, nativa del sureste de Asia es conocida en el ámbito científico como Plexippus Paykulli. Sin embargo, aunque su lugar de origen es el continente asiático, en la actualidad es una especie cosmopolita, debido ha logrado extenderse a lo largo de gran parte del planeta. En cuanto a su hábitat prefiere las zonas urbanas, se les puede ver principalmente en edificios, en las zonas cercanas a las fuentes de luz eléctrica. Esto se debe, a que son su principal fuentes de alimento, allí acechas y cazan a los insectos que son atraídos por la luz.

Now being more specific, regarding the small arachnid specimen I show you, it is commonly known as the Pantropical Jumping Spider or Pantropical Jumping Spider and belongs to the family Salticidae. This Araneomorpha species, native to Southeast Asia, is scientifically known as Plexippus Paykulli. However, although its place of origin is the Asian continent, nowadays it is a cosmopolitan species, due to the fact that it has managed to spread throughout most of the planet. As for its habitat, it prefers urban areas, they can be seen mainly in buildings, in areas close to sources of electric light. This is because they are their main source of food, there they stalk and hunt insects that are attracted by the light.

Les aclaro, que mi modelo es un macho, ustedes se preguntaran como se eso, bueno, no es que yo sea una experta en arañas, pues no, nada más lejos de la realidad. Resulta, que en el caso de esta especie es muy fácil, porque aunque ambos sexos tienen un tamaño similar, es sencillo diferenciar entre los machos y las hembras. Como pueden observar en las imágenes, en este espécimen se pueden apreciar visiblemente que longitudinalmente lo atraviesan franjas blancas y negras. Estando la banda blanca ubicada en la parte central de sus ojos frontales, ahora, en el caso de las patas son amarillentas y tienen una vellosidad bastante visible.

I clarify that my model is a male, you may wonder how I know that, well, it is not that I am an expert on spiders, no, nothing further from the truth. It turns out that in the case of this species it is very easy, because although both sexes have a similar size, it is easy to differentiate between males and females. As you can see in the images, in this specimen you can visibly appreciate that black and white stripes run longitudinally through it. The white band is located in the central part of its frontal eyes, now, in the case of the legs they are yellowish and have a quite visible hairiness.

Ahora, la hembra por su parte, también posee un patrón pero en este caso varía en torno a tonalidades naranjas y marrones oscuros en todo su cuerpo, con algunas manchas blancas. Sus patas por otra parte son de un marrones oscuros, en toda su extensión. Protege sus huevos hasta que las nuevas arañitas emergen de los huevos que se encuentran protegidos en una especie de estuche de seda que ella misma teje. Esta pequeña bolsa de huevos mide de diámetro aproximadamente 3 centímetros y los esconden en lugares de las edificaciones donde no sea fácil acceder a ellos. Luego que nacen las nuevas arañitas, se mantienen con madre, hasta pasadas tres o cuatro cuando finalmente se dispersan.

Now, the female on the other hand, also has a pattern but in this case it varies around orange and dark brown shades throughout her body, with some white spots. Her legs on the other hand are dark brown throughout. It protects its eggs until the new spiderlings emerge from the eggs, which are protected in a kind of silk case that it weaves itself. This small bag of eggs measures approximately 3 centimeters in diameter and they hide them in places in buildings where they are not easily accessible. After the new spiderlings hatch, they stay with their mother until after three or four years when they finally disperse.

Para finalizar, quería comentarles que algo que me pareció muy curioso de la Araña Saltarina Pantropical, es que, a diferencia de otras especies de arañas, esta no elabora telarañas, al estilo tradicional. En su lugar, construye una especie de escondite con su seda, en lugares elevados, esto le permite usar su aguda vista para asechar mejor a sus posibles presas. Las cuales ataca brincándole encima, ya que son sumamente agiles, logrando saltos que superan por mucho la longitud de su cuerpo. Como ya les comente, efectivamente son muy fuerte y aunque inyectan veneno a sus víctimas, normalmente terminan dominándolos con sus fuerte y largas patas antes de que haga efecto el veneno.

Finally, I wanted to tell you that something I found very curious about the Pantropical Jumping Spider is that, unlike other spider species, this one does not make webs in the traditional way. Instead, it builds a kind of hiding place with its silk, in high places, which allows it to use its sharp eyesight to better stalk its potential prey. It attacks them by jumping on them, since they are extremely agile, achieving jumps that exceed by far the length of their body. As I already mentioned, they are indeed very strong and although they inject poison into their victims, they usually end up overpowering them with their strong and long legs before the poison takes effect.
