The meteorological spring began today in the northern hemisphere. With increasing outdoor temperature, many creatures wake up from hibernation.
I guess I'm the first hedgehog to just wake up :-). On Saturday's walk, I met something that I thought was a suitable topic for the next thematic challenge.
Ants and their anthills
(Termites and their structures)
Your task will be:
- take a documentary photo
- try to determine the species of monitored ants (termites)
- write what you managed to find out about the construction of ants (termites)
And here is something for your inspiration
I often walk around this "small" anthill
And I always stop for a moment to watch its diligent inhabitants :-). They are forest ants (Formica rufa L.). The base of the anthill is usually an old stump in which the queen is hidden.
This anthill is a bit strange in that it uses a wire fence as a support. Ants usually build their habitats at the intersections of "earth lines". They use these energy places because they supply the power of their poison, which they need to defend and kill prey.
I know several places where there are more anthills at regular intervals. These anthill lines are oriented either from north to south or from east to west.
And I know an anthill that was destroyed by conservationists. In an effort to protect the anthill from running dogs, they built metal mesh posts around it. They changed the energy of the place and thus "destroyed" the ant colony.
I wish you many beautiful moments while watching diligent ants :-)
Reminder
Let me remind you that there is still an extraordinary Thematic Challenge - Over time.

:-)
here is my entry.
Sadly, I dont have ant-hills around my countryside place, and I definitely dont have anything like that at my place where I live - in the city... And I would not like to have them around !!!
I hope, half-dozen of the ants pics (decent macros!) itself would be quite enough.. and plus some my observations and the story. cheers!
Thank you for your link.
I really don't have to have ants in the apartment :-)
Welcome to the competition :-)
good for you! this is as it should be, nothing to complain, right?
seems we have only three entries now. I think its due to the fact it is winter now, and all the ants are hiding under the snow, they sleeping numb. very hard to shoot their anthills right now. I wonder, why did you come up with such a topic exactly right now? (excuse me my extra curiocity)
Last week we had a warm spring and I was surprised by the "life" around the anthill :-)
we also wad warm rain last week... and then, suddenly, again -15C and a snowdrop! everything is covered with snow again. AND again it is melting. terrible porridge! the best solution for all the critters probably is to wait a bit more, then to react such a contsnt triggers upward--backward...
:P
"I got ahead" the right time :-)
