Hoy, 2 de febrero, se celebra el Día Mundial de los humedales, que conmemora la firma del Convenio de Ramsar (Irán) para protegerlos, el 2 de febrero de 1971. Ya que vivo al lado de uno de los humedales más importantes de Europa, las Tablas de Daimiel, hoy quiero hacerles un homenaje.
Today, February 2, is World Wetlands Day, which commemorates the signing of the Ramsar Convention (Iran) to protect wetlands on February 2, 1971. Since I live next to one of the most important wetlands in Europe, the Tablas de Daimiel, today I want to make a small tribute to them.
Las Tablas es uno de los últimos representantes de las denominadas "tablas fluviales", unos encharcamientos que se dan en zonas de interior especialmente llanas, como la Mancha. En este caso, surgen de la confluencia de los ríos Guadiana, que aporta agua dulce, y del Gigüela, que lleva agua salobre. Las especiales condiciones geográficas y climáticas, y el hecho de encontrarse justo en la vía de paso de las aves migratorias que van del norte de Europa hasta África, hacen, de este paraje, uno de los ecosistemas acuáticos más importantes de la península Ibérica por la variedad y calidad de de la flora y de la fauna que habitan en él. Es, sobre todo, un paraíso ornitológico.
Las Tablas is one of the last representatives of the so-called "tablas fluviales", some waterlogging that occur in particularly flat inland areas, such as La Mancha. In this case, they arise from the confluence of the Guadiana river, which provides fresh water, and the Gigüela, which carries brackish water. The special geographical and climatic conditions, and the fact of being right in the path of migratory birds that go from northern Europe to Africa, make this place one of the most important aquatic ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula for the variety and quality of the flora and fauna that inhabit it. It is, above all, an ornithological paradise.
Por eso está protegido por las más altas instancias: forma parte de la Red de Parques Nacionales de España, está catalogado como humedal de importancia internacional por el Convenio de Ramsar, es una zona de especial protección para las aves de la Unión Europea (ZEPA) y fue declarada reserva de la biosfera por la UNESCO.
That is why it is protected by the highest authorities: it is part of the Spanish National Parks Network, it is listed as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention, it is a European Union Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
Yo, que lo conozco desde niño, visito el parque siempre que puedo. Uno de mis placeres es perderme entre sus islas y bosques de tarayes, cámara en mano. Siempre hay cosas por descubrir. En este pequeño reportaje fotográfico, os presento las Tablas a lo largo de las distintas estaciones del año.
I, who have known it since I was a child, visit the park whenever I can. One of my pleasures is to get lost among its islands and tamarisk forests, camera in hand. There are always things to discover. In this small photographic report, I present the Tablas throughout the different seasons of the year.
Como puede verse, la mayor parte de las fotografías están tomadas en épocas de bonanza, cuando había una buena cantidad de agua. En la actualidad, dista mucho de esa realidad. Ahora se podría ir caminando por la mayoría de esos paisajes inundados. En los últimos años las Tablas están sufriendo bastante por la sequía. El Gigüela es un río estacional, por lo que la mitad del año anda seco. El Guadiana nace a pocos kilómetros de las Tablas, en los Ojos del Guadiana, que es por donde rebosa el acuífero 23, el gran mar subterráneo manchego. O debería rebosar. Porque el problema es la sobreexplotación del acuífero. Cosas de la agricultura intensiva en una tierra de secano. Espero que las últimas nevadas sirvan para paliar un poco la situación.
As can be seen, most of the photographs was taken in times of plenty, when there was a good amount of water. Today, it is a far cry from that reality. Now you could walk through most of these flooded landscapes. In recent years las Tablas have been suffering a lot from drought. The Gigüela is a seasonal river, so half the year it is dry. The Guadiana rises a few kilometers from the Tablas, in the Ojos del Guadiana, which is where the 23rd aquifer, the great subway sea of La Mancha, overflows. Or it should overflow. Because the problem is the overexploitation of the aquifer. Things of intensive agriculture in a dry land. I hope that the last snowfalls will help to alleviate the situation.
Aunque, cuando el parque está en buen estado, la masificación trae también sus problemas. Porque, entre tanta gente que quiere disfrutar de la naturaleza, se cuelan algunos indeseables que dejan su rastro allá por donde pasan. Algunos, cosas peores que la pura basura.
Although, when the park is in good condition, mass tourism also brings its problems. Because, among so many people who want to enjoy nature, undesirable people sneak in and leave their mark wherever they go. Some of them, worse than pure garbage.
Olvidan que, cuando sales al campo, solo debes dejar solamente tus huellas, y solo llevarte las fotos. Porque, con un simple paseo tranquilo y silencioso, se puede disfrutar plenamente de este espacio natural tan único.
They forget that, when you go out into the countryside, you should only leave your footprints, and only take your photos with you. Because, with a simple, calm and quiet walk, you can fully enjoy this unique natural space.

Wetlands play such a big part in sustaining nature, absorb water assisting avoidance of flooding, store water for migratory and unusual species, truly a living entity.
Sadly waterways in South Africa where I live are still under extreme stress from pollution via agriculture, spillage of chemicals, sewage, plastic all human negligence.
Not only do wetlands store, but purify water, release excess out of them when drought arrives, it is about time more attention was given to them and reviving them to their former glory.

Las Tablas de Daimiel are also under great stress, especially due to the overexploitation, by intensive agriculture, of the aquifer that sustains them. There are an estimated 10,000 illegal wells around the national park (in addition to the legal ones). A decade ago, another extreme drought caused a subterranean fire in the peatlands that was inextinguishable. Miraculously, it rained that year as it had not rained in more than 20 years. Nature itself had to intervene. I hope the people of this land begin to understand that, because I don't think there will be a second chance.

Sadly if people don't stop doing what they are with pollution we will leave little behind for future generation.
Living in a dry country makes it much more evident, yes fortunately we get rain to help, however it is up to us to clean up the mess.

Impresionantes las fotografías, es un lugar sublime soñado, además un lugar importante para las aves migratorias, me entristece pensar lo de las seguías... No sé y sería un buen ejercicio que podrías hacer de sensibilización, tratar de tomar las mismas fotos, es decir en los mismos lugares para hacer la comparación de un antes y un ahora, aunque vendrán tiempos de lluvia y es posible que vuelvan a llenarse de agua, el calentamiento global está afectado de manera fuerte las fuentes hidricas.

Las fotos de la nevada son muy irónica, porque se ven secas pero cubiertas de nieve, que es agua, en realidad. De lo de las entrevista tuvieron la culpa unas ánades reales.
