On my way from a week-long stay at a farm in the Ozarks in Arkansas to an off-grid community in northern Arizona where I plan to be staying for the next couple weeks or so, I found a nice and scenic place to spend a couple nights in the high desert of northern New Mexico.
After two days of driving and a night in a hotel, it was nice to finally be out in nature again, and with some really amazing high desert views.
Not far off the I-40, but in the middle of nowhere in the remote northwestern corner of the state, I was happy to find such a quiet place, with no other campers anywhere around and only a couple of vehicles driving by my entire stay here.
And, I thought the spot I found in the dark turned out to be a good find, with gorgeous views of the surrounding bluffs and mesas, and right below some really cool rock formations!
Six mile canyon, I believe it’s called, and further up the road there’s nicer spots with more space that are set back further off the road, but I liked how this spot is tucked into the trees against the rock walls, and I didn’t mind being right off the road with the low amount of traffic there’s been...
The weather’s been hot and dusty, but it’s really pretty with the spring colors - all the grasses and sagebrush turned green, an infrequent sight in the desert country, and the prickly pear cactuses bloooming.
There also just so happened to be a dirt road going up the hillside right near where I camped, which made for some really nice bike rides with my dog Dakota, and amazing views from up higher, even able to look back down into the canyon and road below from a high point above.
And some of the best scenery, as typical of any desert country, was the gorgeous sunset views.
I guess I can see why they call this state the Land of Enchantment. Now it’s off to spend a couple nights in the forest country of the San Francisco Mountains near Flagstaff, Arizona before heading to the off-grid community in the same area on Monday.
Great sunset and cacti pics! Thanks for sharing.
