Exploring hidden fresh mountain river valleys just inland from the coast of South Africa

One of the safest feelings when living in nature or far from the city, is to be located near fresh water. This is crucial for our survival and so a fresh river makes a perfect source of shelter and sustenance when hiking or camping in the vast expanse of nature.

When we hear about the droughts currently happening in first world countries like USA, EU, Australia, etc, it forces us to realize how dependent we are upon nature, regardless of our political or economic position in the world. As rivers dry up, survival is decreased and also transportation is reduced for goods that are moved via barge.

Here in sunny South Africa we also have a delicate relationship with our water sources, so fortunately I was recently able to leave my coastal base and head inland for a while to check them out first hand. I made a journey of about 40 kilometers inland and up into the mountains, up stream along the Keurbooms river which runs out to sea on the southern shore of Africa at a town called Plettenebrg Bay.

By driving inland and up into the mountains, I was able to explore closer to the source along this beautiful fresh water river that constantly flows in this region. It is really remote and so I doubt anyone else will really get to reach this piece of the natural environment. Therefore, I am happy to reveal it to you here today for your viewing pleasure and to remind us all of how beautiful life can be when the basics are in place.

An area can be considered opulent if it has the basics of fresh water secured. Even wealthy nations are struggling to secure the water supply for their citizens. Nature dictates most of the time and we can only work around her, despite our appearance of dominion over our environment.

This mountainous region alongside the Keurbooms river is mostly on private land and really remote, although there are public camping areas where one can enjoy the features of the river up in the mountains. You need a good car to access the place since the road is gravel and quite simple. Mobile phone reception is very scarce too, so you are really out on your own, like in the good old days, before satellites and modern communication.

Thus the air is clean and clear of electromagnetic or any other pollution. Residents are still able to access Wi-Fi here today, which is great as it allows one to stay remote while still staying connected. This is perhaps the best of both worlds. Add to that an ideal set-up using solar panels and batteries, and you will be seriously sorted and self-sufficient here on the hilltops inland beside the Keurbooms river.

An amazing source of fresh water high upstream in the mountains

As you can see in some of the photos, the water is a dark orange color, like tea, due to the plant content I presume. It is shallow enough to walk across in some places and winds along the contours of the hillside. It’s easy to use the numerous little boulders and rocks to create dams and pools which become nice and deep for swimming or for pumping water to a tank.

If you are happy being far from the city or the masses and like living off the land and off the grid, then you will love this part of the world. With WiFi available it becomes the perfect place for a digital nomad or someone who can work-from-home. The beauty of nature in her nurturing aspect, as we see here up stream on the Keurbooms river, is really inspiring for body, mind and soul.

It’s the ideal place to bug out or have a small community of like-minded people living and working together without too much concern about what’s going on anywhere else. Somewhere to retire, write a book, or practice your deep meditation to transcend the harsher existence that the masses are forced to endure in the cities of the world.

I hope that wherever you are, you can also retreat to a river like this where you can take shelter for the long term and ride out the stormy decade of the roaring twenties that we are currently enduring globally. We’ve only just begun...
