That's a big one, my boy!

A number of wild lizard species can be found on our homestead. They are part of our "Organic Pest Control Posse," and they help keep our property more enjoyable by eating a wide variety of bugs and insects. A lot of the time, a lizard running around is preferable to some creepy little bug. At least four species of native lizards have been found on our property, including Five-Lined Skinks, Easter Fence Lizards, Little Brown Skinks, and Broadhead Skinks. Of these species, the Broadhead Skink is the largest.

While we were working on the root cellar build the other day, our oldest son "Monster Truck" noticed some rather large lizards by one of our wood piles. After a bit of effort, he had a large female in hand. Around here, this is a rather large lizard, and some years we don't even see any this big. I think it's a large female Broadhead Skink, and after some admiration and photos, we released it back onto our property. They are an important part of the ecosystem, and we really enjoy seeing them around.

Some years, we've even found their eggs while working in the garden and were able to let them hatch in our hands. It was some pretty cool hands-on homeschool biology for sure.
