We've had some hot dry weather which seemed to benefit the warp population for they are abundant at this time. I found 3 different nests all very unique - one hanging between tree branched, one in-ground and one in the soffits of our roof - let's have a look...
Wasp Nest Near Completion in the Tree
Wasps Busy Building Walls of Their Nest
The cool thing about the paper in the wasp nest is when the wasps chewed up the plant material and mixed it with their saliva, this gave it a flame retardant quality. It was used as wadding in muzzle loading guns because of that reason.
The next wasp nest I found I had almost stepped on when I went to get a close up of some wild flowers. Luckily I saw a number of them and quickly moved away. From a distance I inspected where they were coming from and found their nest under a rose shrub and built out into the grasses. They were busy building those outer walls with a few going in and out of the entrance hole under the shrub when I saw them. It's fascinating to watch them build and to see the final product.

Closer Look at the Wasps Building Their Nest
Here is the wildflower I was going to take a photo of - the goldenrod.
Even though we had a pretty dry spell and a lot of the wildflower blossoms had dried off the goldenrod was still going strong.

The last place I found a wasp nest was in the soffits of our roof. There was a steady stream of them going in and out of a gap in the soffits. They were high enough up that they didn't bother us and we didn't bother them.

Some other insects I saw were the butterflies on the thistle flowers - a lovely combination with the purple of the thistle flower and the orange of the butterfly.

Another flower that was managing to remain in bloom throughout this dry spell was the hyssop.

On the way home we saw the horse sisters out grazing among the fireweed blooms.

Back at home the buddies Bruno and JJ were hanging out on the deck.

Flowers to please around every corner with great photography of those wasps and plants.
Clever where wasps set up house, fascinating to watch them, not so great when disturbed on hot days!
Have a wonderful weekend in nature!
Cool about using nest for wadding. Love the JJ and Bruno one!
