Post goes for #AmazingNature Thematic Challenge; weekly theme was: Natural Macro.

Being a vivid macro photographer, no doubts I have a lot to share. When I checked the week prompt I said myself: yes! - and immediately forgot about the competition, because I was busy all week, and for a couple of days I didn't even write one post. Happily.... on Saturday night (at 3:00 AM) I checked the few pages I check on a regular basis... checked the Feathered friends' page for current week contest (it is: Angry bird. a splendid one!), and the Amazing Nature challenge, as well.

Now I am in the middle of considerations what I am supposed to come up with. But - happily! -- I have a deadline coming in 19 hours, so this will help and work as a booster, haha.

As it's macro, I will post hi-res images today, so that you may open the pics in a separate window to see the tiny details and enjoy the captures in all their hi-resolution majesty.

Mother Nature is a good designer ... maybe it uses a blind method and is not always too consistent, but note, it has many resources, the main of which is time ... it had many billions of years for experiments. And Nature may boast a huge number of successful and interesting designs. An infinite number of samples, actually ... each of them is a unique piece of work!

With this magnificent image (which I am actually proud myself) I decided to let you slip into my 'macro' kitchen for a little excursion. A feature of macro photography is the impossibility of obtaining a large area of magnification; a macro lens can focus only on a small area, in which we get a detailed image, and everything else turns out to be blurry.

This mushroom was quite large, 6-7 cm in diameter of the cap. In the photo you can see all the grills clear and detailed, they are all in the focus area - because a) I did not bring the camera too close to the mushroom, did not focus on one grill only (then we would see it with a high magnification and in the focus area, but would not see everything else), here in the focus area is "the whole mushroom"; and b) even so, I had to assemble this synthetic image from three separate frames.

The name of the technology is 'macro focus stacking'. /

m0.jpg

In the beginning, of course, the photographs themselves are taken. With a slight, extremely smooth focusing ring stroke, I took several photos, shifting the focal point from the farthest point of the subject to the nearer one. Then I processed the photos in Photoshop (nothing out of the ordinary: lightened the shadows, raised the contrast, made the colors clean and pleasing, that's beyond the scope of this story). Then all three photos are placed in one file, on different layers.

m2.jpg

The "Auto-align" command aligns the photos within the subject, and then the "Auto-Blend" command actually performs all the nasty work: Photoshop's artificial intelligence analyzes each layer, selects the most sharp and detailed image area, and erases the rest. The resulting "layered cake" consists only of desired image areas that appeared in the focus zone (well, as much as the photographer was able to do it, of course). The more source photos were taken with small and smooth focusing steps, the better and more detailed the result will be.

Some macro photos are collected from over a hundred separate frames! Needless to say, this fun is quite time and resource consuming... actually its my fondness of macro photography and focus-stacking became one of the main reasons for me to upgrade PC a few years ago.

And this is what you can find inside of the mushroom, if you are equipped with a macro lens. Yeah, some lovely worms. Most of mushrooms dont left untouched -- very soon they got tenants! The most tasty and soft ones got tonns of them 😜

If you live a poor life and do not have enough money to spend a weekend in the Maldives ... or you cannot afford a jet to Sumatra to acquaint with all the jungles, insects, mushrooms, coral reefs there - no problem: Macrophotography will help you! Even your backyard can be a great place to travel - the main thing is that you have to equip your eye with a magnifying gadget. The $3,000 lens and a full-frame camera isnt a must, smartphone patch can save you as well! And then - I wish you a lot of free time and sun, good lighting, calm windless weather, and of course a great bio-diversity. Any bush and flower or mushroom will become to you a fascinating long memorable macro-journey to another planet inhabited by ... someone.

Wonderful edits, @qwerrie.
I missed my Photoshop program.

well, photoshop became more available nowadays, with the cloud / subscription technology ... and having thousands hours of YT lessons, answering almost any question you may need, masterclasses, guides, tips... you need just one thing: passion... or maybe three: considering also patience... and the most sufficient one, is the time for that, haha!

and Grazie Mille! I am happy you enjoyed the visuals.
hot tasty !PIZZA, as always.

That was so amazing natural macro photogrqphy @qwerrie, thanks for sharing this... ^_^ I love the caterpillar part, what a beautiful red caterpillar...

hi there! it is not that beautiful as you may deduce looking at it. it is a larvae for some big night moth named Cossus Cossus, you may google it out.. thats a very scary pest! it can delete useful fruit trees and full orchards, if you let it copulate and grow without control. just for your notice.

anyway thanks for choosing your favourite capture from the whole set, I always appreciate that very much! my fave probably is the mushroom, haha.

did you enter the A.N. challenge this week?

Yup, I agree my friend ^_^ There are many things in this world that look beautiful to the eye but have scary things behind them, heheh... but honestly I like that one only for its appearance... however, thank you so much for warning me about the dangers of this one larvae, I really appreciated it... I have a lot of fruit plants here, I will be wary 😬

Of course, I did... my entry for the AN contest this week is about the moss... ^_^

already checked it :D

😎

Ow that's cool... I really appreciated it man ^_^ thanks a lot, hope you having a good day~

Wow, it's cool you show pictures that are very extraordinary.

yes, but it intended to be my entry for the Amazing Nature contest... and I dont se it among the entries, neither I received any feedback from @bucipuci why the post was rejected. feel confused, why so :/

I also do not understand my friend, what is the cause.
Maybe you can try again.

Thank you and sorry again. Perhaps this will not discourage you from participating in other challenges.

maybe it discourage me from checking and voting other publications. nobody cares, even the hoster of the challenge...

Voter turnout is really very low. A while ago, I wrote @adalger to "persuade" at least other ANC moderators to vote

I dont know why, really. what is the reason. lazyness, probably.

There can be thousands of reasons.
But at least community moderators might realize that voting should be part of their "work" for the community.

Hey @bucipuci, here is a little bit of BEER from @qwerrie for you. Enjoy it!

Very nice macro using a 60mm. I am guessing you used a +10 Filter on it? I really like the depth of field. I am guessing the aperture was set to max to allow max light to enter the lens? I am sure it depends on the picture and you might have changed it at every shot? Excellent shots.

no! I dont have any filters. pure lens.
last summer I had a trouble with my full-frame 5D, but happily had my old (pioneer!) 350D with me, thats why I used Tamron 60mm (it has bayonet suitable with cropped 350D, but cant be mounted to the f-frame 5d).

the depth of field... isnt that high, actually. this can be seen very well in other takes on this lizzard. I guess this one turned out well cause I didnt approach camera too close to it, besides that it was very very small object.

ps. it was captured under direct sunlight, I didnt set aperture to max. I can check exact settings, if you're curios.

glad you liked it! - !PIZZA

Thank you for clarifying. This is very interesting to me. Makes sense. I never used a 60mm prime lens before, but i always thought one that's higher like 105mm or 135mm might be suitable macro on smaller objects or some insects. Although i did once try a 24mm with a macro filter and found it interesting. I narrowed the depth of field by reducing the aperture.

60mm or 150mm - that does make sense in the key of capturing shy creatures... true.

BUT on another hand, it provides me serious problems with timings. tele has to use timings accordingly... i.e. 150mm means I should use 1/150 or so... not less. otherwise I got all the bad consequences (as I am using it without tripod. just handy work). 150mm also means it is extremely weighty. less then 1kg but... apparently so. more than 1kg with the f-f camera. I dont want to say it is bad - no! its a great lens I am in love with, it became my everyday... it has a great bokeh and light-power. but it does have pros and contras, and after trying 60mm and 150mm, I want to get 100 or 90mm.. . which will be less weighty, and allow me doing shorter timings from hands.

extra lens can be used to get 2:1 instead of 1:1 magnification. (I was considering getting from ebay the Raynox DCR-150 ... and would love to try it still... maybe, someday.. when HIVE arises to 3-4 dollars ) combining that with a bigger distance from object, you may be getting a less narrow DOF.

reducing the aperture doesnt allow to increase DOF sufficiently... it is still 1-2-3mm, not 10-15mm.

60, 100, 150mm lens - they all have the same 1:1 magnification.

are you in the know of #Laova lens? they have some manual telephotos having 2:1! which is superb for macro on a good full-frame camera. I didnt have a chance to test this even once.
