One morning in Argentina, I was walking ... I didn't just walk with no aim — I went from El Chalten to meet the dawn on the lookout with view on Mount Fitzroy. I hoped to see the peak, but with no luck: the second day Mount Fitzroy was tightly covered with clouds and did not show up. Well, okay, my morning was not wasted — I found a European hare in Argentina instead :)
Before that, I stood quietly in anticipation of dawn, no one else was around, so he did not pay much attention to me and allowed me to watch him from a distance and take some photos while he ate. In general, hares are shy and move very quickly, so I tried not to make noise and not frighten him off — his ears are big, sensitive, and if something frightens him, he will jump right away!
Then, of course, I did not know yet that it was a European hare. At home, I saw that he was actually not local there, like me :) They were once brought to America, both North and South, and in some places they took root quite well. I read that in Argentina they are even considered pests for agriculture, as in Australia. But in some European countries they are under state protection.
In general, these hares as a species are quite safe — they are not picky about food, they feed on plants, starting from leaves and stems, ending with seeds and bark of trees, and they reproduce well. And despite the fact that they are hunted in many places, they are not threatened with extinction.
