Walnuts Husk Wool dying

in NeedleWorkMonday3 years ago

Hello Needle Work Monday Community.
Here is another post about dying wool with walnut husks.
img_9242.jpg
Start with about 15-20 grams of wool or as much as you would like.

Here is some samples of other wool that i have dyed.

Take off the Husk and use that to dye the wool.

It will come off in chunks as these are a bit frozen. Being frozen makes it easier to remove.

Here is how the Walnuts were found outside under the tree.

Hanging from the tree.

The husks come off and create a black liquid.
img_9235.jpgPress the wool under the liquid and let it stay there for a long time on low heat over the stove.

img_9005.jpg
I heat and add water for over two days. I turn the stove off overnight but start it first thing in the morning.
img_9238.jpg
The process is the same as the last post i did about dying wool. Add water and put on Low heat for a long time. (https://ecency.com/needleworkmonday/@an-man/avocado-wool-dye-technique-94546c86bea2f)
img_9258.jpg
Leaving the liquid to cook off over time makes the concentration of colour into the mix. 25 hous +.

img_9261.jpg
Add more water often and do not let the wool burn, or your house down.

img_9262.jpg
Add Vinegar about a few table spoons so that it will fix the colour to the wool. Adding more vinegar is beneficial as it will not ruin the wool, but adding too little will make the wool color not fix to the wool. You will have to find a balance.

img_9264.jpg
With the right amount of vinegar the color will cling to the wool and the water will be quite clear.
img_9265.jpg
One last heating and washing of the wool before i take it out to dry.
img_9267.jpg
Wash in mild dish soap to loose off anything that does not fix and to get the bits of Walnuts husks off the wool. Do not be too vigorous at this point as wool will felt if it is agitated too hard in cold water after being hot for 26 hours.
img_9269.jpg
Hand press out the excess wool.
img_9271.jpg
A very nice colour that develops from the walnuts.
img_9272.jpg

img_9279.jpg
Notice the deep colouring of the wool.
img_9281.jpg
Here is contrast to the two wools dyed, the light one is coffee.
img_9283.jpg
The light wool is dyed with used coffee the dark is with the Walnuts husks.
img_9286.jpg
The final results provide a nice rich dark brown that can be used in various projects.
Thanks for coming by and having a look at what i have been up to. If you have any questions feel free to ask and i will be glad to help you get some wool dyed.
