Mi amigo Carlos vino en diciembre a darme un telar Navajo que había sido usado por él en una sola ocasión en un curso de tejido al cual asistió hace muchos años cuyo instructor fue un verdadero nativo Navajo, el se sentía muy complacido con el tejido en telar pero en su mudanza a mi ciudad hace ya como 8 años el perdió los ovillos de lana y nunca terminó el tejido, de hecho este ya había acumulado mucho polvo y decidió dármelo a mí a ver que podía hacer con el telar y que si era posible rescatar ese pequeño tejido que él había hecho con sus propias manos.
My friend Carlos came in December to give me a Navajo loom that had been used by him only once in a weaving course he attended many years ago whose instructor was a true Navajo native, he was very pleased with the weaving. But on his move to my city about 8 years ago he lost the balls of wool and never finished the weaving, in fact it had already accumulated a lot of dust and he decided to give it to me to see what I could do with the loom and if it was possible rescue that small fabric that he had made with his own hands.
Es primera vez en mi vida que veo un telar navajo y sin la posibilidad de continuar el tejido por no tener la lana apropiada ni saber mucho del tema, decidí que lo mejor sería extraer el tejido del telar y luego ver que podía hacer con él.
It is the first time in my life that I see a Navajo loom and without the possibility of continuing the weaving due to not having the appropriate wool or knowing much about the subject, I decided that the best thing would be to extract the fabric from the loom and then see what I could do with it.

Para sacarlo del telar tuve que primero extraer el hilo que envolvió de manera espiral el palo que estaba en la parte de abajo del telar, al hacer esto podría liberar el tejido sin perderlo porque me di cuenta que una lana gris aseguraba el tejido tanto en la parte de abajo como en la parte de arriba si el tejido fuera sido terminado en la parte superior.
To remove it from the loom I had to first extract the thread that wrapped in a spiral way the stick that was at the bottom of the loom, by doing this I could release the fabric without losing it because I realized that a gray wool secured the fabric both in the bottom as top if knitting was finished on top.
Después que liberé la tela del lado de abajo me dispuse a hacer lo mismo en la parte superior, pero como el tejido no había sido terminado quedaría en el aire las hebras de hilo en orientación vertical.
After I released the fabric from the bottom side, I started to do the same in the upper part, but since the fabric had not been finished, the strands of thread would remain in the air in vertical orientation.
También quedaba insertado el palo pequeño que tenía los hilos que tenían la función de arrastrar o hacer la función de un peine para traer los hilos hacia abajo. Entonces el paso siguiente fue quitar esos hilos del peine, para así poder arrastrar hacia abajo la lana gris más gruesa que permanecía en la parte superior a donde debía haber llegado el tejido.
The small stick that had the threads that had the function of dragging or acting as a comb to bring the threads down was also inserted. So the next step was to remove those threads from the comb, in order to drag down the thicker gray wool that remained on top where the fabric should have reached.
Después de arrastrar el hilo gris hacia abajo, corte una a una las hebras verticales y anudé para asegurar el tejido.
After dragging the gray thread down, cut the vertical strands one by one and knotted to secure the fabric.
Una vez que obtuve el tejido del telar me di cuenta que tenia las dimensiones para hacer la parte frontal de un gorro, por lo cual busqué entre mis estambres algunos restos de proyectos anteriores que fueran de un color que se viera bien, así conseguí estambre azul índigo, azul marino y negro.
Once I obtained the weaving from the loom, I realized that I had the dimensions to make the front part of a hat, so I looked among my stamens for some remains from previous projects that were in a color that looked good, so I got blue yarn indigo, navy blue and black.
Con los estambres y agujas de tejer #4.5, monté 50 puntos y tejí con punto elástico (1/1) hasta alcanzar la longitud deseada, antes de llegar al final hice 5 disminuciones por 10 vueltas cerré el tejido.
With the yarns and knitting needles # 4.5, I made 50 stitches and knitted with a rib stitch (1/1) until reaching the desired length, before reaching the end I made 5 decreases for 10 rounds and closed the knitting.
Arruché la parte superior de las dos partes de los tejidos, posteriormente cosí los lados y di la vuelta al gorro. Lo último que hice fue lavarlo.
I crumpled the upper part of the two parts of the fabrics, then I sewed the sides and turned the hat over. The last thing I did was wash it.
Resultado / Result
Creo que fue una buena experiencia extraer este tejido del telar navajo, descubrir como se hizo y poder crear una prenda con un pedazo del recuerdo de mi amigo que espero le guste.
I think it was a good experience to extract this fabric from the Navajo loom, discover how it was made and be able to create a garment with a piece of my friend's memory that I hope he like.

jajajaja bueno era el rescate el tejido no del telar, lamento desilusionar :( , pero el telar lo tengo para cuando consiga la lana correcta poder aprender la técnica, ahora solo lo entiendo en teoría a través de la observación que hice sacando el tejido de allí pero no se si cuando lo ponga en practica va a salir correctamente, creo que lo mas complicado es el inicio, es decir poder hacer el montaje de los hilos de manera correcta , ya con eso descifrado podría hacerlo sin problema, pero necesito lana, no se si pueda hacerlo con estambre, aunque es una posibilidad. Que maravilloso material! Es muy bonito e interesante las cosas que nos dejan las tradiciones de otras latitudes como esta de los tejidos Navajos. También me llama la atención estos temas, aunque no soy muy activo que se diga, pero no dejo de disfrutar de estos temas. Ojala pudiera ver un tejido navajo de cerca.
