Kamen Rider, literally translated as Masked Rider, is the first franchise in the history of Japanese television of the subgenre Henshin Hero within the tokusatsu genre which is known as any film or television series of real action in which an intensive use of special effects is made which we owe the existence of Power Rangers in the West. The creator of Kamen Rider was the mangaka Shōtarō Ishinomori, and consists of 28 television series many of them with associated films, 5 independent films and several mangas. The series are in turn divided into two periods, the so-called Shōwa period, broadcast between 1971 and 1989, and the Heisei period, which began in January 2000 and ended in September 2019, giving rise to the Reiwa era, which has been broadcast ever since.

Each season of Kamen Rider presents a different story with independent characters and plots, although they all follow a similar scheme. The main character is usually a biker who, by various means, sometimes technological and sometimes magic or a combination of both, transforms, always using the phrase "Henshin" (transformation) into a superhero called Kamen Rider with an armored suit that usually has a design reminiscent of an insect fused with the theme of the season. In some seasons there is only one Kamen Rider, while in others there are two or more. These Riders fight against monsters or even sometimes each other.

It is a sign of identity of the Kamen Rider not possess a giant robot, but as a final attack a flying kick that is generically known as "Rider Kick". They usually create much more elaborate plots and less episodes than in Super Sentai. Another sign of identity is that the powers of the protagonist Kamen Rider always have an evil origin of the same type as the villains or closely related to them, but uses those powers for good instead of evil, and this relationship becomes a source of conflict.

Shōwa Period

The first 9 series had a single theme, all (except Amazon) were cyborgs wearing an insect suit to end the evil organization that created them and took away their humanity. They were so similar to each other that the best of them is not the most innovative but the one that executes best its clichés, being the case Kamen Rider Black, from 1987.

Heisei Period

From Kūga to Decade (2000-2009):

UnrealisticPlasticChamoissize_restricted.gif
(Ixa's Transformation)

resulted in an experimental period for the franchise having to compete with Super Sentai. In order to obtain an identity of his own, he chose to have a more dramatic tone than the colorful Super Sentai. The main character could have several forms with unique weapons and powers compensating his solo work. The transformations do not occur during a light-filled transition but rather brief ones that occur without a change of scene. Instead of having a group of friends with whom to promote teamwork, the appearance of a new Rider implied either a rivalry that could escalate into friendship or a deadly enmity. But he was also inspired by Super Sentai to provide his protagonists with a "Final Form", a transformation superior to all the previous ones that he obtains before reaching the final battle.

In 2009 was reconsidered the use of cards in 2002 they gave the Kamen Rider Ryuki different weapons, and based on that they pointed out the identity of this decade, that in each season a series of collectible gadgets would be added that would grant different abilities and even be able to combine them. Among others, medals, buttons, rings, spheres, cartridges, etc. could be seen. In addition to the plot, they found a balance between drama and comedy.

In addition to the series included in the official season account, Toei created Kamen Rider Amazons, a mini-series inspired very freely by Kamen Rider Amazon, but aimed at an adult audience with a more graphic violence than the normal seasons.

Adaptations

In 1995, Saban, following his success in adapting the Super Sentai Series in Power Rangers and Metal Hero in VR Troopers and Beetleborgs, produced an adaptation of Kamen Rider to which he added the former international title of the Japanese franchise, Masked Rider. It aired between 1995 and 1996 and was presented as a spin-off of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in which the presentation was made at the beginning of the third season. It used footage from Kamen Rider Black RX and the films Kamen Rider ZO and Kamen Rider J, the result: a failure.

In 2009, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight was produced from Kamen Rider Ryūki which completely changed the plot but kept the serious tone, and although it was cancelled before its broadcast on syndicated television was completed, it won a Daytime Emmy award for best specialist coordination at the 37th award ceremony with good reviews. In addition to a moderate success in Latin America.

As it is an extensive franchise with its masterpieces, garbage, great things, and rare things, if I had to recommend where to start would be the film Kamen Rider Z-O (for those who are lazy a series of 45 episodes minimum), Kamen Rider Faiz (the most complex series) Kamen Rider Fourze (the most fun) or Kamen Rider OOO (the balanced).
