DIY Recycled Milk Carton Planter

My daughter has been home sick the last couple days, and we spent a lot of time inside. We needed a craft to work on together and I recently saw painted coffee tin planters on Pinterest. However, I did not have any coffee tins in my recycling. I did have milk cartons, though. I decided we could recycle the milk cartons into planters and paint them as Spongebob characters, because it has been SpongeBob everything in our house lately. Check out the steps we took to create our fun planters below!

Squidward and SpongeBob

Materials:

  • Milk Carton
  • Marker
  • Pencil
  • Sm./Lg. Paintbrushes
  • Knife/Scissors
  • Paint (various colors)

Steps:

Step 1. I drew a line around the milk carton to the desired size of the planter. Then I used a knife to cut the line all the way around.

Step 2. I poked holes in the bottom of the carton with a knife.

Step 3. I mixed green, blue and white to make the Squidward color. My daughter painted both planters a solid color. Then we waited for them to dry.

Step 4. I drew the facial features with pencil first. Then I added different colors to the features.

(Definitely messed up on the Spongebook cheeks and needed to fix those).

Step 5. I fixed the cheeks of the Spongebob that I messed up on. Then I traced the outlines of the facial features with thin black lines of paint.

Step 6. We poured some soil into the planters and added the plants.
