Splinterlands Weekly Battle Challenge - Beatrix Ironhand, The Unyielding Princess

in Blockchain Gaming3 years ago

It has been a BUSY week for Splinterlands, and it's only Tuesday. SPS Airdrops started today, but I'll save that for another post - this is a new battle challenge!

I'm excited for this one - Beatrix Ironhand is one of my favorite cards and is an absolute staple in my Earth lineups. So much so, when one of the members of our Crypto Gaming Guild asked for recommendations of cards in the Earth splinter, this was an easy choice to delegate to them along with Mylor Crowling.

She's a ranged character who has the Close Range ability. Most ranged monsters stop attacking when they hit first position, but Beatrix keeps going until she's down. At level 2, 6 Mana buys you a fast 4 speed delivering 3 ranged damage until all of the 5 health are taken away. Level 3 adds Thorns, but I tend to pair her with Mylor Crowling to get those for free (and added to all other monsters). Needless to say, she is well deserving of the name Ironhand for how battles can be controlled with her.

I'll get this out of the way - this is an incredibly boring battle against a bot, complete snoozefest. So why highlight it? Beatrix's unique position - she's separate from my other ranged monsters.

The ruleset called for evens only and Fog of War - no sneak/snipe. Meaning, the front would be hit pretty hard (with the exception of monsters that have the Opportunity ability - none here though). With that in mind, I've got a lot of buffer up front - Chain Golem with Shield and Void Shield, Failed Summoner with Reflect.

Cornealus is great - but if that got to the front, wouldn't do much except serve as a self healing wall. Mitica Headhunter is fast, but again, not going to do me any favors in first.

Generally, if I'm down to only one monster on the field, I want it to do damage (except in very specific scenarios where it's a battle of attrition). Kron is an absolute unit - but he can also attack from first and provide Beatrix more cover (it'll take them longer to get through Kron than Beatrix, so my DPR remains higher). But, if it's only Beatrix, Close Range kicks in and she'll keep going until she falls.

Truly, Beatrix Ironhand is deserving of the Epic class she falls in. I've compared the Hero of Beyond as a "Life" version of Beatrix in terms of utility, but even then that card doesn't make it into my line ups often.

The only downside is the attack animation is still the arrow instead of the awesome blade boomerang she wields (maybe in a later update - custom attack animations guys?).
